can somebody in retail confirm this?

if you are weak-stomached, you might not wanna read this. but you’ll probably wanna know if this is true or not…

so, i was listening to This American Life last week at the library, and stumbled upon the MOST interesting claim. this five minute story was featured in their “David & Goliath” edition on 11.10.2006 (you can listen to it here, fast forward to 50:52 – you won’t believe your ears).

anyway, they discovered (by interview, NOT by experience) that people defecate INSIDE retail stores.

yes – #2 INSIDE retail stores – and NOT in their bathrooms.

yes – in the “walk around & buy stuff” area of the store.

yes – a LOT

yes – like 95% of stores:

department stores

GROCERY STORES (the horrors!!!!)

libraries (uh oh!!)

GAP

etc…

apparently this is their way of getting back at retail giants. wow. WOW!

ya know, even though i get frustrated with “big box retail,” i can honestly say that this thought NEVER crossed my mind!

are any of y’all aware of this phenomenon? [i DON'T wanna know if you've actually done this.... k. thx.]

  1. Yep, it happens a lot. Especially with old people…sad I know.

Happened at Victorias Secret(Beauty room floor)
    Happened at Walmart(by grocery area)

People sometimes just can’t hold it.

That is why every place needs to have a close bathroom.

My mom has Chrons disease, and it is one where you have to run to the bathroom 30 sec after eating almost anything, and most of the time you don’t make it.

Feel for these people. Its sad.

  2. comment left by shelly on mandy’s computer:
Okay, my first thought was for the poor sweet one that couldn’t discuss the aforementioned topic.
My second thought was uhm….in the bathroom – yes, I’ve known this for a long time.
My third thought was if it was not in the bathroom, I don’t think my own stomach could handle it!

  3. I have been told my clerks in retail (especially shoes) that this really does happen. I can’t even begin to imagine, but…..

Actually, it has happened in one of my offices, and the mother didn’t even offer to clean up ANY of it. The office manager and one employee ended up doing it. That’s dedicated staff.

  4. I’m just starting to worry if there is a new trend in your topics since Whatever Wednesdays (ahem…Drew) and this post.

If so, here are some suggested future posts themes:
    Mirky Mondays
    Toilet Tuesdays
    Friday Foul
    Smelly Saturdays

BTW – In my 4+ years at Food Lion, I never experienced it.

  5. Upon further thought on this subject (disturbing in and of itself) I have a PSA for you all…before making a purchase, double check the Almond Rocha Bulk Bin in your supermarket.

    I’m here to serve…..

  6. I was pulling up to a donut shop once and I saw a woman squatting and releiving herself just outside the store,in broad daylight. Didnt know what think, was rather embarrassed/disgusted by it all. Needless to say I lost my appetite for a while.
Dont know what to think, maybe some people have problems holding it, diahrrea or some problem with thier system.
But for people who do it out of spite, I have no sympathy at all.

  7. Remember my poop-in-the-pool story? I have since heard that the “big kids” who come to the pool without their parents find it to be a hilarious prank to do just what you’re describing, only in the water!!!! Lovely, huh? I’d labored under the false notion that it was the work of an improperly diapered baby! What is wrong with people, for cryin’ outloud?

  8. For some reason… My Labor Day carne asada just jumped in my stomach.
I’ve heard this especially here since I am 10 minutes from the border (mexico).
    Wow…

  10. I work at a BANK and had this happen. It was an old guy, and he HAD used our restroom, but left a trail (not from his feet) all the way out the door. Boss wanted me to call facilities to clean it up, but as it was in customer sight, and facilities would take hours to show up, I cleaned it up myself.
And we never saw that customer again. And his house was cleaned out by his children. (I’d seen him sitting on what I would assume was his own porch on my way home.)
