i grew up in southeast Georgia, where we only had two seasons: HOT and BLAZING HOT!
life in Massachusetts has been far far far from hot…. and now the leaves are turning a-crayon-box-full-of colors again. i always heard that fall in New England is incredible. and i also grew up wondering why the “fall colors” were bright orange and yellow and red. it seemed so strange to me that our kindergarten Thanksgiving decorations were such bright colored leaves… because the leaves that fell from the trees in my Granny’s yard were a soft brown and ugly lifeless gray. no color there.
then i realized that citizens of New England ruled the color-culture of the fall season!
the landscape becomes a breathless rainbow of warm warm colors, as if the trees themselves are protesting the cool cool air that surrounds them in a misty fog with each sunrise.
although i too am protesting the bitter cold that’s coming, i protest with an embrace of this beautiful fall. i embrace it because i know what to expect. we’ve been in New England for over a year now, and i’m finally entering a season where i know what to prepare for up here. i’m not a big fan of surprises and like to be in control (its a character flaw, i know….), so an entire year of unpreparedness with each new season began to drain me. now my soul can rest!
here’s what we found last year:
what about you? do you enjoy fall? what do you love the most about it?
I also gre up in South GA so I understand you. However, now we are no longer there and are looking forward to what Fall looks like here.
I look forward to fall because of football. College football … hubs and I love it! And now we are teaching the boys to love it too. They root like pros for their DAWGS!
How’s your sis-in-love?
Thinking and praying for you and yours. I absolutely love the fall colors of New England. I have taken several week long trips this time of year and into October just to see them. God paints them himself you know
And if you see some today that you really especially like and have caught your attention..that is just for YOU! Have a great day, love ya, Princess!
I love fall. while at bible college we lived in Missouri, fall was our favorite thing about MO. Here in Texas we do not get that pleasure. Enjoy it.
Here in Kentucky… we have only had a small taste of cool mornings so far.
I am looking forward to fall! I just hope that the terrible drought we have experienced hasn’t ruined what color we were going to see.
fall’s my favorite… attached to many poetic memories of change. it will always remind me most of all, though, of running around as a child in the pecan orchard trying to catch the leaves as they fell. to say i miss that simplicity is a gross understatement.
I used to love jumping in the leaves when I was a child in NJ.
Here, it ain’t fall, its still summer ugh.
My mom talked about taking us to NC to see the leaves change plenty of times, we never got there though.
I guess I like fall most because you see death happening in front of you, but you are aware that there is about to be a new beginning.
Be Blessed:)
I enjoy most the colors, and knowing that it’s not winter. AND, sipping on warm hot chocolate and coffee without spilling it on me while shivering in sub-zero winter weather. I don’t spill coffee on me in the fall time
deer hunting with my Dad, Georgia football, high school football, October Halloween/Fall Festival’ish cookouts, Thanksgiving, and the anticipation of Christmas.
I LOVE IT – my favorite season!
Its the best time of the year to feed my addiction. Inline skating, inline skating and more inline skating……..Its cool…so you dont sweat buckets, the traffic in the park I skate in is almost non-existent because everyone is back at school or work. The autumn colors are awesome like you describe, and I get a lot of time alone and to think while Im doing the miles.
An idyllic existence.
I loved this post! I think you painted a beautiful, clear picture of fall up in the North East.
Growing up in Upstate NY we used to rake the leaves into huge piles and jump off the deck into them.
Their was always this feeling in the air when Fall was coming. You would get out your favorite sweater, go to the apple farm and have some hot apple cider, curl up under a blanket and enjoy the smell of the fireplace burning for the first time of the year.
I’m going to miss that so much living here in Texas.
I love the colors of fall, but that means the cold and blah of winter is coming–and coming—and coming here in western NY. The nights and early mornings are already too cold!!!
I love to drive through the hills when all is a painting of beautiful colors though—especially with a bright sunny day!!
Fall is my absolute favorite season. I love the crispness to the air, the beautiful color splashed all over the countryside, the smell of woodsmoke drifting from a chimney, the crunch of leaves under my feet, and… of course Patriots football.
I don’t know how anyone could look around at Autumn in New England and NOT believe in God. I just don’t. This could NOT be an accident!
I think fall is my favorite season. I love seeing the leaves in all their beautiful colors, especially here in the Appalachian mountains. It’s a prime photography time for me too, & the colorful leaves make photos much more interesting!
I’ve been to Boston at the tail end of the leaf peaks there, & it was beautiful!
So gorgeous!
any updates on your sis in law?
Fall used to be my favorite season until I had kids and wound up INSIDE nonstop for 6 months! I still love the romance of fall, beautiful colors, picking apples, the smell of leaves burning, making a great pot of soup, a nice cup of hot tea on my back deck…but since I know winter is coming, it is a little bittersweet.
Fall is absolutely my favorite season – it’s cooling a bit and there are craft fairs everywhere with FUNNEL Cakes. I don’t think any further explanation is needed..:))
