about those songs that get in your head and won’t stop playing

over the past week, i’ve noticed that i have these songs that just play over and over in my head.  well, that’s not the strange part… i’m a musician: there’s always a song in my head.

BUT, i’ve noticed that i don’t even LIKE some of the songs in my head.

for example: right now i have “I Need a Hero” playing over and over again, completely against my will. i guess its there because i have to drop drew off about 3 miles away — through freezing rain and snow and icy conditions… and i need an experienced snow driver to drive me back home. :(

and, here’s the scary part: the other morning Lee Greenwood was serenading me with “God Bless the USA” in my head… inexplicably.  in December. and i don’t know why he was in my head… and he kept.coming.back.uninvited…. see, there he goes again, singing away, just because i remembered to tell y’all about it….

i think i’d rather be listening to “I Need a Hero”…

go away Lee.

anyway, here’s the deal.  i’m totally ok with songs in my head that i actually LIKE to listen to… but what do i do about those uninvited melodic monsters that creep in and take over???

do any of you have songs that just.won’t.go.away?

how do you make them stop?

or does that mean i’m crazy? [oh my, now i've got Gnarls Barkley going - auughhh!!!! but, atleast i'm not singing "I Need A Hero" anymore.]

I start serching in the net and there is no information about this problem, Is it a real problem? is there some specialist who can help us?, or give us information why this happen

  2. Just mentioning the idea of an unwanted song playing over and over and over in my head brings back memories of nights of closing up Big Cheese Pizza in high school and a song I hated, and even now hate to name, on the “juke box”. No matter what it seemed to always continue to play in my head over the next several days. Here it goes, even now, almost 20 years later…

  3. I’m about to tattle on my 2 year old but I think this is hilarious. She loves Alicia Keyes’ song “No One” so much she has taken to substituting words for the chorus…”Elmo, Elmo, Elmoooo” and then there is “Grover, Grover, Groooverrrr”. You get the picture…So what happens..I’m stuck with the song in my head. But I’ve found that if I sing it out loud it goes away…of course, I have to make sure no one else hears me singing about Elmo and Grover! LOL

  4. possible remedy*:
i read one time that the theme song from the cartoon “the smurfs” is a trick to remove a stuck-in-the-head song while not getting stuck itself. go back to your childhood and remember the “la-la-la-la-la-la” melody. i think this works because the melody is catchy enough to replace it, but there aren’t actually words to get stuck. sing it in your head (not out loud) to yourself a few times and see if it helps.

or maybe you’re just a music person who’s destined to be stuck with a song…

*i make no guarantees this will help anything, and it may actually make it worse (or perhaps just different).

  5. Oh boy, do I know what you mean Mandy. Yes, I get song stuck in my head two. Try this to silence anything “noise” or “music” in your head. Close your eyes and look down toward your nose. I use it when I want to still my mind and simply listen. Don’t know if it will work for you or not, but it’s worth a try.

  6. I have had different songs stuck in my head for 2 and a half years now. It is very annoying and I subvocalize the words until I think I’m going to choke. It’s very bad and I’ve gone to therapists about it. They’re baffled, so no help there. I’m pretty desperate as it is overwhelming my life.

  7. I have songs in my head constantly for years. Its like a mental radio and I’m not even a musician. Its really unhealthy and emotionally distressing especially when you have all these negative feelings of yourself and listening to these songs usually create positive emotions. I

I also suffer from disassociative identity disorder. This plays a negative role in the songs in my head. A very bad mix can occur and if you’re not thinking straight, it can be mentally debilitating.

If you have songs stuck in you’re head and suddenly can’t I suggest getting help. I know I should probably see psychiatrist or undergo hypnosis or something. This is getting ridiculous!

  8. Hello,
What you have is obsessive compulsive disorder.I am suffering from the same thing .I have had it for about 5 years for now.I have changed about 7-8 psychologists till now in these past 5 years ,no one could help.I used expensive medicines that just came into market like abilify.I had a neurological test done ,MRI scans and other nuerological tests ,the names of which i forgot .The nuerologist whom i went to said evreything was normal,so it is not neurological problem.I have used medicines like clonazepam, respiridone, busiprone. If anyone has found an answer to stop these songs, please send a mail to vamsikris27@gmail.com.If you also need any help feel free to send a mail to me,i can atleast guide you since i have had it for five years .

Here is one small solution it is not working for me anymore but i read it in a newspaper:replace the repeating song with another song so that the repeating song subsides. Please try this.

And my psychologist told me to keep myself as busy and preoccupied as possible.Hope this helps

  9. sometimes the voices or songs you hear belong to other astral or spiritual beings who are hanging onto your physical body in order to share/or control, if they are strongly enough attached to your body, your actions. Sounds crazy, but we live in a sea of “dead” physical beings who are lost in their dreams or if they are concious enough find outlets for they’re desires for physical contact with the living by attaching themselves to the living and controlling us by singing or yelling in our ear. Some of these beings are very evil…so be careful who you let sing to you. Remove them through prayer or creative visualization. Visualize psychic police coming to your prayers to remove them and taking them away. Bless them and pray for their continuiong evolution towards the “Light” and love.

  10. Hello. I’ve found that with a tune running repeatedly in my head, if I visualise the musicians playing at a concert, then I make an effort to imagine that they bring the song to an end, and the audience claps and goes crazy, as they do at concerts (!), do this a few times, and I find it often works more than not.
