WW – Ash Wednesday Blog Trading Edition – 2.6.08

Happy Ash Wednesday everybody! this is my favorite holy day of the Christian calendar year. i love being reminded of how stinkin’ awful i am and how much i need Christ’s redemption in my life. yeah, its somber and heavy and dark…. but, ya know, my life would be even darker if it weren’t for the Power of Christ, right?!  i think i could use more reverence and awe when approaching the throne of Grace.

anyway, what were we talking about? oh yeah!! EdfromCT closed things out with a great question last week: If you could trade blogs with someone else which blog would it be?

EASY!  gimme boomama.net!!! i LOVE the way her mind works… love love love it…. no, wait, i think i’d wanna be flowerdust.net – anne jackson is one COOL chick.

and did i mention that BOTH OF THESE BLOGGERS are gonna be in Uganda next week, blogging for kids and christ and compassion international? keep them in your feedreader, its gonna be AWESOME. (no, that was not a shameless plug – they are not paying me – this is really just THAT exciting.)

be a part of the movement.

ok, first question of the day: Ash Wednesday – do you do it? why or why not? elaborate!

the rules: answer the last question & leave a new question for the next commenter who’ll answer your question & leave a new question for the next commenter….. have at it! and i’m wondering if i’ll ever just cut & paste these rules instead of re-writing them every week? who knows!!!

  1. A: No, I do not celebrate ash wed. I guess my simple and lazy answer would be that I just haven’t researched and studied it (history and tradition) of it.

Q: Who is your absolute hero right now?

  2. I don’t participate in Ash Wednesday (if your referring to the part about getting ash on your forehead), but I do like participating in Lent.

    Next question:
Did you vote yesterday (if your state participated in Super Tuesday), and if so, what’s something that stood out to you about your experience? Example: I had a Ron Paul guy shouting all about Ron Paul as we were walking in to vote. I’ve never really encountered people actually standing the required 30 feet away from the voting premises and representing their candidate.

  3. “In the Western Christian calendar, Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). It falls on a different date each year, because it is dependent on the date of Easter; it can occur as early as February 4 or as late as March 10.

At Masses and services of worship on this day, ashes are imposed on the foreheads (or tonsure spots, in the case of some clergy) of the faithful. The priest, minister, or in some cases officiating layperson marks the forehead of each participant with black ashes in the shape of a cross, which the worshiper traditionally retains until washing it off after sundown. The act echoes the ancient Near Eastern tradition of throwing ash over one’s head to signify repentance before God (as related in the Bible).” (Excerpt from wikipedia, for full Ash Wednesday info go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ash_Wednesday)

Have you ever washed someone else’s feet (excluding giving a child a bath or caring for an ill person, etc., in other words a symbolic gesture not a hygienic gesture)? When, and what was the purpose? Also, what did you learn (assuming you did learn something) from the experience?

  4. NO, I havent………I just think its just meant as an metaphorical example for service to others.
I didnt vote in the election, sorry……I am Canadian……and find the American election process rather boring and long winded…
Sorry…Mandy..I seem to be screwing up WW ….my apologies…
Anyway…..my question is…You are scraping snow off your car window and some guy who is ovbiously desperate comes up to u and starts giving you a hard luck story and asking for spare change. You are in a hurry, and all you have is a couple of 20 dollar bills in your pocket.
Do you give him a 20 dollar bill or lie and say you simply have nothing?

  5. A: bert, as a female, i think i would run… luckily, my husband fields those needs when we are approached. actually, he’s more generous than i am. he’d give the $20. and i’m thankful that i’m married to a man that is a protector and giver all at the same time. :)

Q: do have a Valentine’s Day nightmare story???

  6. A: V-Day Nightmare:
YES! When I was a freshman in high school on the yearbook, there was a weird senior on yearbook who totally STALKED ME around school and town!! I mean to the point of nearly taking out a restraining order. It was really just because I was very insecure and new and he thought he saw a chance. Anyway, among many scary and very inappropriate things he did, the most innocent and LEAST intrusive was to show up at school on V-Day with a HUGE box of chocolates, flowers, and balloons for me. I couldn’t take them. I had to tell him (again) to back off.

Q: Have you seen this new show “Moment of Truth” on t.v.? It’s a gameshow where the contestants have done a polygraph and are asked personal questions that could get them in trouble if they answer honestly…. but they get money if they do. Ex. “Do you find fat people repulsing?” “Do you really care about the starving children in Africa?” etc. They have a few close family or friends there and often the questions the show makes purposely involve them so as to turn up the heat more. They can win up to 500,000 if they make it all the way through with honest answers. SO, my question is… What do you think about this show? As a sociology major… I find it fascinating how people react in that situation.

  7. I’ve seen it on occasion and the questions about infidelity usually I find offputting.
I am disturbed that so many people find this form of dirty laundry interesting. It worries me that children watch this kind of thing and form thier opinions of adulthood this way. Shows like “Are you smarter than a 5th grader”, while kind of cute, really show what the bible means when it says “Children rule over thier parents”.
I think we are really scraping the bottem of the barrel in America when it comes to our viewing habits. Thats why I dont spend much time on TV any more. Its just become a cesspool where people glory in what really are abominations.
Anyway……if you could add one more hobby to your already amazing ones, what would that be?

  8. “Anyway……if you could add one more hobby to your already amazing ones, what would that be?”

I don’t know if this could be considered a hobby but I think being a Personal Shopper would be fun! I don’t get to shop a lot, but would love to if I could. So to spend someone elses money and basically call the shots – would be great!!!

Q: What are you looking forward to the most about Summer?

  9. Q: what are you looking forward to the LEAST about summer?

A: The heat! I am a cold weather person, I can definitely enjoy nice springtime weather in the mountains as well, but get above 70 degrees on a regular basis and I start to melt at a rapid pace!

So, now it is my turn…
Q: (Trying to hold on to the cold weather here) What is your favorite cold weather activity?

  10. “Q:What is your favorite cold weather activity?”

Hanging out at home with a nice hot coffee, wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket with my laptop on my lap (the bottom of it gets nice and warm) Good Times! I love baking in the Winter. I’m not much of an outdoor cold weather person. My white skin that looks like Skim Milk now can testify to that :D

New Q: What are your next vacation plans?

  11. Q: What are your next vacation plans?

A: I have frequent flier miles that i’ve been wanting to use up so i’m hoping to plan a little reunion with friends from college. We might go on a cruise, or rent a cabin in the TN mountians for a long weekend. Just a fun time to catch up with the girls! :-)

Q: If you were given the chance to be on any of the following reality tv shows, which would you choose and why… Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Bachelor or Bachelorette, or The Apprentice?

  12. “Q: If you were given the chance to be on any of the following reality tv shows, which would you choose and why… Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Bachelor or Bachelorette, or The Apprentice?”

OK, I’d choose The Bachelor. I KNOW! I’m married! But have you met Vinny???

Just kidding! I’d want to be on that show to slap some sense into all those crazy women. HELLO! Get a grip on reality! “OH Yay! I get to go on a weekend trip with this guy I’ve only known for 4 weeks. 3 other women are coming along so he can have intimate dates with each of us then he can better decide who he likes more, keep his options open, isn’t that cute?! Yay!!! Do you like me? Check -yes- or -no-”

    Oh My LORDY!!!

New Q: Ont he subject of Reality Shows. If oyu could create your own…what would it be?

  13. Q: If you could create your own…what would it be?

I would get a group of children and put them into an environment where they would have to act like adults.

I would then get a group of adults an put them in an envirnment where they would have to act as children. No Wait! I did see adults acting like that on the last Presidential debates. :)

Q: What material thing, car, tv, computer, etc. would be the hardest for you to give up and could you do without it for the next 40 days,

  14. A.Internet, and starting tomorrow i am giving up internet ofr Lent-PRAY FOR ME PLEASE!
    Q. Which would you rather have, good reputation or money?
(and i wont be able to check your answer for 6 weeks!! aaah.)
have fun, Gd bless. Be back in March.
p.s. i posted my Ash wednesday story on my blog today…Gd is Awesome, thats all I can say-Ash wed is MY favorite too!!

  15. Well, I guess we can all make fun of Robin here for the next six weeks. :)

    Q. Which would you rather have, good reputation or money?

I would rather have my reputation. When I was laid off it was my reputation that eventually got me rehired. Of course you could say it was my reputation that got me fired in the first place. :)

Q: In the last year what is th longest you have gone with out using a car?

  16. So, I never play this because it is always a question that is too much thinking for me or I can’t think of a question..so here goes.

Q: In the last year what is the longest you have gone without using a car?

A: A week. I was just content staying home.

    Q. What’s your favorite pastime?

  17. A: Lately out favorite pastime is finding new game parks. Here they are like 5 bucks. The other day we found one only a couple minutes from our house and the animals came right up to the car. Literally the giraffes and baby rhino was 10 feet from us…really, who gets to do this? Yay for God and all His Glory! Woo hoo!

Q: Do you think admiring somebody,(ie… – Cory Ten Boom, your mom, Paul, idolizing?

  18. Q:Do you think admiring somebody,(ie… – Cory Ten Boom, your mom, Paul, idolizing?

A: I am not sure what the question was. My first idol/hero was TV cowboy Hopalong Cassidy, from the early 1950′s. The entertainer I most admire now is Natalie Merchant. She took a year off from performing to work at a homeless shelter for children in Harlem, NY and just put out an album, along with Bruce Springsteen and some other artist, of songs written by homeless people.

I think idolizing someone can be a problem if it becomes too much of your focus. There is a big difference between admiring someone and idolizing them.

Q: Have you ever meet a child hood hero? If not how do you think you would react if you did?

  19. I probably would have thought of someone like Shaun Cassidy or Andy Gibb (died) as my heroes…maybe even Parker Steveson (Hardy Boys anyone?)…I was deep like that. I guess if I did meet them today, I would think, “What in the world was I thinking????”

Q: Who would be your Vice Presidential pick if YOU were Presdient?

  20. Q: Who would be your Vice Presidential pick if YOU were Presdient?

Which ever Democrate doesn’t not get the nomination.

Q:When was the most signifcant scarifice you have made for another person, or that a another person made for you?
