YAY or NAY: nicknames???

just this weekend i was talking with two different friends about nicknames…. came up in two totally independent conversations.

she might kill me for saying this, but one of them confessed that she’d been given the nickname “hellraiser” in college. um, yeah, she’s a seminary wife up here.

one asked me about my nicknames:
mandy
luce (mom & dad)
pee-turkey (dad – i peed on him when i was a baby)
mandela
mandylicious
mandeesa
mandolin
sugar (drew)
darlin’ (drew)
aunt mandy (that’s my FAVORITE – from my nephew davis)
AC (my grandmother)
egg-head (old college friend)
muffin – or babs? – i can’t remember which! (best friend from home)
mandy-bear (friend up here)
mandy-girl (somebody from every stage of life has called me this.)
mandy-pants (from one of my favorite ladies at my old job. it CRACKED me up when she gave me that name.)

moral of this story? i’ll answer to just about anything!

so, what about you? what nicknames do you have? SHARE!

  1. No nicknames for me although my toddler, Naomi, is just “OOHH-mee” which sounds very much like “homey”. Hmm. Quite cute to see a little blonde toddler running around calling herself “Homey”. =)

  2. this is fun – i like mandela :)

you’ll see alece – she is the queen of giving nicknames – it’s adorable. although we’ve not found one for her – except emma calls her ‘lece or a-yece.

    my nicknames:

    dee dee (brother)
    deestra (older brother)
    D’Artagnan (a family friend)
    Yeller (alece)
    honey (daniel)
    mama (emma)
    danny (high school friend)

    nicknames are fun :)

  3. I used to have some, but I don’t think I’ve been called by any in a long time.

I was called “Air Force” for a while by the youth group, because I used to be able to look up in the sky at any plane and tell you what it was. Yeah, I’m kinda nerdy like that.

My choir director in high school just called me “Miller.” She used everyone else’s first name, but not mine.

One I’m not proud of, but I was called “Mac” by the tennis team, after John McEnroe. Yes, I was a pretty good tennis player, yes I had crazy-curly hair like he did at the time, and yes I would curse a blue streak on the court when things didn’t go my way. Like I said, not a proud moment of life.

I guess now I’ve got the obligatory “honey” from my wife, and of course “Daddy” from my kids (if that counts). Every once in a while I’m called “the music guy” at church.

  4. Jimmy – at home, my mother did not want to have me called Jr., both me and my father are Ed.

Bucko – by my uncle Jim

JD – by local the gorcery store owner we shopped at. That either stood for “Jim Dyer” or “Juvenile Delinquent”. :)

    Irish – my Army buddies

    Uncle Eddy – my neices

The nick names my girlfriends give me are x-rated. :)

Nicknames some of my bosses gave me I also can’t mention here. :)

  5. mandarin orange, i am SO not a fan of “big al”. (did that REALLY need to be said?!) c’mon! what’s a girl gotta do to get a decent nickname around here?!

  6. mandarin orange, i am SO not a fan of “big al”. (did that REALLY need to be said?!) c’mon—what’s a girl gotta do to get a decent nickname around here?!

  7. tried to post this HOURS ago (stupid african internet):

  8. Alece, I see from your site that you work with the Basotho people. I found a site that list some Basotho words, I won’t provide a link so I don’t get caught by the spam gods, sesotho.web.za/names.

I saw a few you might like. I don’t know what funny names they may be calling you behind your back. :)

Shoeshoe – a flower, Hypoxis Argenta
Keromang – One who is sent
    Mpho – Gift/Present
    Mamello – Patience
    Tumelo – Faith
Masilo and Nitatsi – Tradtional female names.

There is also Dikgang (SaSe) – Argument. I don’t know what kind of personality you have. :)

  9. inWorship: vinny will have to get over it, or else we will start calling him brent! he he he!

Ed: i like SHOESHOE because it sounds roughly americanized… but i think Keromang or Mpho (pronunciation???) would be most fitting for her. we’ll have to see what she says!

  10. My guess that Vinny would like “Khabane”, warrior, or “Nkwe”, tiger. “Diketei”, accidents, might also be appropriate.

Mine would be “Mafatla”, a bald head showing old age and wisdom. At least the bald part fits.

  11. can’t believe I’m even telling this, but Charlie calls me Weezie because my middle name is Louise and he heard my dad call me that way back in the day. No matter how much I stressed to him that I hate it because that is the name of that lady on The Jefferson’s, he insists on calling me that. It’s quite distressing, but I’ve stopped fighting it.

  12. ed — i’m impressed by your thorough digging to find me a nickname. although, i don’t think i can really picture mandy using a sesotho word/name for me… we’ll see! :-)

  13. i am proud of you for admitting it there buddy
who is carrie-gremlin wrangler????? i need this person to do just that! lol

  14. Okay. Sorry I missed this whole conversation. And how cute is that “Mandrin Orange!”?
Um…Renzy? (From Van Rensburg…Although I can’t see myself actually calling her that!)

Daniel proposed “Rent” because her name is A-lease! :) No.

I’ll think of something, although this has been my project since she developed Yeller.

  15. edfromct -

the basotho people call me mamoruti, although more as a title than as a nickname. it’s hard to translate, but it’s something like “pastor’s wife”. moruti is pastor, and so mamoruti is an endearing name for women in ministry…

  16. D & A: i got NOTHIN’ … no legitimate ideas for alece’s nickname. problem is: i actually LOVE her name. its so sweet…poetic… it just sounds good. and its short. usually people get nicknames when they have long or complicated names. “Alece” is short & pretty.

alece, your lack of nicknames might actually be positive! i mean, who wants to ruin a good thing???
