Only One: Make-out OR Movie

2008 April 21
by mandythompson

[because y'all need a warning: this is another installment in the never-ending "only one" story]

[for those of you who are just stopping by, welcome to the strangest series found to-date on my blog.]

here’s a quick update: you were jailed and could only eat one meal 3 times a day for the week… THEN, you got out of jail and your parole officer made you join some civic organization. you joined the SORRYs, who ban all fiction books, but let you keep one. a few years into the club, the highest level of induction was reached, in which you became a governmental memory guinea pig and wiped out all but one memory. THEN, you were walking down the street and ran into a friend, who works for a secret unit that reverses the effects of the memory wipe-out program by generationally-relevant sensory overload. you recently completed the 48-hour blasting of your favorite teen album.

so, your crucial teen years have been re-established. and you are SERIOUSLY regretting the fact that you can now remember puberty  , nevertheless the good outweighs the bad… i mean, think about it – some of the good includes your first make-out session!!! anyway, what were we talking about? …. oh, yeah. you are ready for the next phase of the reversal process – the restoration of childhood.

part of this process involves watching 6 consecutive runs of a movie that came out when you were a kid. it doesn’t have to be a kids’ movie – just something from that era.

anyway – you pick the movie – any “old” movie. any.

OR! for an alternative commenting experience – you COULD just tell us about your first make-out session since your teen memories are restored (real life memories, people!). because, seriously, who wants to talk about old movies??? be sure to keep it family friendly around here or else i’ll censor you!

i’m just sayin’

[wink wink]

“american tale”. i used to love that movie and i haven’t seen it in … well, probably decades.

and i honestly have no teen make-out stories. my husband was the first person i made out with… when we were dating when i was … oh… 20-ish.

  2. 2008 April 21

OHHH— and when i read the title of your post, i thought you were gonna ask if we prefer to watch or make-out during a movie. and my answer to that unasked question is: it depends on how bad the movie is!

  3. 2008 April 21

Al:  so, how bad DOES the movie have to be? yay for hubs being the first – i’m a BIG fan of that. i tried to make out with drew on saturday – totally failed. we went to a morning movie – and for the first 10 minutes we were the only ones in the theater. sat in the BACK. last row. middle. i was TOTALLY flirting with him. luckily he wouldn’t have it -> a couple of teens came in and sat ON OUR ROW – then all flirting came to a screeching hault.
    dang it!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. 2008 April 21

in a practically empty theater, why the heck did they choose your row?!?! sheesh.

the movie ‘badness’ = how disinterested niel is. if he is into the movie, forgeddaboudid!

  5. 2008 April 21

Al: i KNOW. i was hoping that for our 5th anniv we’d have a GREAT made-out-in-the-theater story! but, they were pre-teens who DEFINITELY didn’t know better. talk about awkward!!! so, i’m flirting with drew and he won’t have it – AND you’re flirting with Niel and he won’t have it??? WHAT is this world coming to!?!?

  6. 2008 April 21

    for real!

  7. 2008 April 21

Well, there is NO WAY I am going to tell you about my first kiss. Gentlemen don’t discuss such things. And, in this case, I won’t either.

So a movie that I have to watch from when I was a kid? Just one? Well, it’s a toss up between “Les Voyage Dans La Lune” or “Preservation of the Sign Language”.

  8. 2008 April 21

I am so jealous of those whose first kiss is now their spouse.

Yea I kissed girls when I was a teenager. Man, talking about your old self dying off.

  9. 2008 April 21

I’m still pretty uneducated on the whole “make out” thing. So I guess I can’t comment until I discover what that’s all about – my parents never sat me down and had that “talk” with me.

  10. 2008 April 21

    Fred: talk to your wife!!!

    Joe: ditto…. old man dying!

TheNor: proud of you for restraining. way to set the standard!!!

  11. 2008 April 21

Cereal. I’d have cereal in jail. But what the heck is this straight-laced girl doing in jail? Hmmm.

And my first make-out session was awful. I was 14. My thought was, “What in the heck is he doing sticking his tongue in my mouth.” Gross out.

  12. 2008 April 21

Cindy: gross out indeed!!! me too!!! i’m glad i’m not the only one who found the teen years to be challenging. so… is your blog working yet? :(

    Dan Underwood permalink

no make-out stories here, but the movie would have to be… either “ET” (threw up in car riding home from seeing it, wanna redeem it a little) or “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (’cause my parents wouldn’t let me watch it when it came out – too violent for my innocent little eyes)!

  14. 2008 April 21

Dan: you weren’t allowed to watch TMNT???!!!! bless your heart.

  15. 2008 April 21

    mary poppins.

and, lili, that’s aweseome. did i mention, i miss you!

  16. 2008 April 21

Yeller: you did mention that you missed her – on HER blog – i just saw! :)

  17. 2008 April 21

The Princess Bride. I also think this may have been the first movie I saw in theaters.

  18. 2008 April 21

Movie from my childhood: “The Sword in the Stone”

Speaking of stones, I also liked “Romancing the Stone”

Speaking of romance, kissed one guy. It was gross. Kissed another guy. It was gross too. I thought there was no hope, until I kissed the man who is now my husband. Wow! :-D

  19. 2008 April 22

LOL @ Alece: ‘if he is into the movie, forgeddaboudid!’

Being a person who would have others believe he’s a gentleman like NE’er, i cannot kiss and tell – but i would point out that ‘in my youth’ (and hormonal hurricane season) i attended many movies at the drive-in with my wife-to-be that i Really wanted to see… i rarely saw the ending – or the middle, come to that! ;-)

So my one movie to bring back childhood memories would be…’Mad as a Mars Hare’ Starring Bugs Bunny and Marvin the Martian (1963 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057272/) it’s a ’short’ but any movie of Looney Tunes Merry Melodies from the 60’s would bring my childhood flooding back :-)

    NatJ: CLASSIC!

    Love: 1963????????????????????

  21. 2008 April 22

love – that was a joke. totally.

  22. 2008 April 22

okay – kind of delayed… but mandy – i needed to jump back in on our conversation from way back up there.

niel hates hates hates public displays of affection. if i kiss him in public (forget making out… just a peck), he gets dodgey eyes (checking out who’s checking him out) and feels very uncomfortable. a few weeks ago, he wanted to bet me on something. i was sure i would in (of course he was sure he would win, too). we each named the thing we wanted if we won. mine was that he’d make out with me in public! ha ha ha. how bad that i have to arm-wrestle my husband into that?! anyway. i of course won the bet. but he has yet to pay up!

  23. 2008 April 22

    LOL!!!!!!!!!!
i BETTER get an update on this when he pays up!! HA!!!!

the only ‘making out in public’ we’ve done has involved a LOTTA darkness. LOTTA darkness.
and never AT the movie theater.
now, a rental from blockbuster and a couch, well, that’s another story.

drew and i probably lean towards the “more PDA” side of things, but never in an awkward sorta way in public. you know, like couples who are all over each other and stuff. no. not us. we hold hands, or steal a kiss, or sit real close, etc… of course, drew is more cautious than i am. so, he and Niel have THAT in common!

  24. 2008 April 22

oh yeah – i’m not looking for the nasty, obnoxious “oh-please-just-get-a-room” kind of PDA (wink, wink!). not a fan. BUT we are husband and wife. so in my mind, he shouldn’t be afraid to give me a smooch or hug me tight or hold my hand with people around.

he is getting better than he used to be. i must say that.

  25. 2008 April 22

GET A ROOM! HA HA HA HA!!!! they don’t know how funny that is to me. oh well……

glad to hear he’s getting better. i think its fun for married people to act like they’re in love sometimes.
    sometimes.
    NOT all the time!
    but sometimes.

  26. 2008 April 22

glad you laughed as much as i did.

and yes. i’d settle for sometimes.

  27. 2008 April 24

niel bet me again. i wagered the same as last time. i (of course) won. so he owed me two make-outs. ha ha.

i got him to pay up today. on one.

    email will follow!

  28. 2008 April 24

    good stuff, eh?! ;-)

  29. 2008 April 24

SHUT UP!!! he owes you AGAIN!?! LOVED the email! i WISH everyone else coulda heard that story! WOW.

  30. 2008 April 24

ha ha! i’m contemplating a blog post about it.

and then it all comes back to where the heck that line is!?!?!

  31. 2008 April 24

i was wondering if you’d do a post on it. but, that dang line. yes. the post might just cross it. if Niel gets all dodgey in public, he probably won’t want it admitted to the WWW!

  32. 2008 April 26

HOW COME i missed this convo the first time???

I can see i’m gonna have to brush up my lurking skills! I’m missing out on some seriously good stuff!

I can also see i’m going to have to have a serious ‘Man-to-Man’ talk with both Neil and Drew if i ever get my butt over there.. This is the 21’st century – we men no longer have to be afraid of showing our feelings, PARTICULARLY to those who we love the most and who love us likewise (well, as far as Human love goes anyway ;-) )

Within Reason – of course :-)

    Hang in there, ladies!
