i may be related to america’s next top model

May 9, 2008 · 34 Comments

i think i mentioned that drew’s cousin is on America’s Next Top Model. yes. i did.
the season finale is wednesday night. she’s currently in the Top 3 remaining contestants. i don’t do much reality TV, but i’ve been watching every week. SOO interesting. SOOOO interesting. i’m sure i’ll have more thoughts to come.
but, for now, i’m just thrilled for drew’s fam and thrilled for Size TEN healthy women all over the country!!! i think they have at least one “plus size” model each season, but i don’t think they’ve had one come this far.
so, what do you think?
have you been watching the show?

Am I reading the right article? The one I saw was about a guy from Cuba?

  • Jenn // May 9, 2008 at 7:26 am

Is size 10 really considered plus size?

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 8:25 am

Heather: thx! the link must be a rotating link with new articles. the old article disappeared - but i PROMISE it was there. oh well. cut and try again. ;)

Jenn: from my understanding, anything over size TWO is considered plus. gasp. yes. the standard model size is TWO for the fashion industry. all of the “display” clothes they use for runways, etc, come off the size TWO rack. didn’t know ANTM would be so educational for me.

i DO NOT watch the show, but will be watching to see if any men actually admit to watching it!

  • christi // May 9, 2008 at 8:39 am

dang i guess i’ll be gone for the finale. :(

  • Jenn // May 9, 2008 at 8:50 am

Thanks for clearing that up, Mandy. Although I am no longer there now, I looked pretty dang good at a healthy zize 8. I guess I’ve been plus size longer than I thought. :)

  • Holly // May 9, 2008 at 8:54 am

Whitney is FIIIIEEEEEEERCE. Just like you Mandy, just like you…

  • Heidi // May 9, 2008 at 9:04 am

I think society would stop watching if a plus size would appear on top model. How sad!! For this show only I think it’s okay to show the slimmer beauty.

Now… the rest I’ll be brief. I was talking to one of my kids friend’s this last week and we were talking about how skinny everyone is in highschool (freshmans) they were telling me it’s a new craze to Monster purge. They eat a little and drink a Monster and then purge (vomit). It’s a new bulimia craze in CA high schools.

Oh… the friend is a friend of my son.. the bulimia craze is with the boys.

    How crazy is that?

  • Becca // May 9, 2008 at 9:26 am

    Wow. Size two.

    Ha.

I don’t have anything else to say.

  • juliepersinger // May 9, 2008 at 9:40 am

I haven’t watched. I don’t think my left thigh would even be a size 2.

  • beth // May 9, 2008 at 9:58 am

I used to be a size 2; when my life was falling apart.

Now I’m happy and healthy, and apparently a plus-size. A size 10, that is.

Where are the Cheetos? I need to console myself.

  • Becca // May 9, 2008 at 10:18 am

    Good for you, Beth. Amen.

  • Kristiapplesauce // May 9, 2008 at 10:36 am

Wow. We don’t get that show here…but when we were visiting for Christmas, they were doing like ANTM marathons like on 4 stations and we watched them the whole time we were there. Yay for whatever. I love it. Fierce is like my 9th favorite word to say. So like what? Does she get anything for being in the top three or two if she doesn’t win? I wish I was a size 10 or 8 or anything less then I am now. Seriously…my butt is big. Dang.

  • gchyayles // May 9, 2008 at 10:36 am

I used to be a size zero in high school; didn’t like eating and it wasn’t to keep my weight down either, I just didn’t like eating. Through college [freshman 100 and everything LOL] I fluctuated between a zero, one and two. At that time, I sort of became obsessed with wanting to stay at a zero. Anything above zero = GASP. I really believe that was a cultural thing. Girls back home are SUPER-skinny and if you put on a little bit of weight, people tease you and say you’re eating too much. I’m now between a 3 and a 5 although 5 is more comfortable and I’m not too fond of super-tight clothing anyway. After all that, let me answer your question [which was not to share my personal experience with weight and sizes LOL] I haven’t watched the show in a long time. I don’t get to watch too much tv and when I do, American Idol is where it’s at LOL.

  • Becky // May 9, 2008 at 10:37 am

I’ve been watching off and on. I hope she wins. She’s beautiful and NOT anorexic. I think she resembles Marilyn Monroe quite a bit. That’s cool that you are related!

  • gchyayles // May 9, 2008 at 10:39 am

Kristi–I have a tiny butt, may I have some of yours? LOL I was told in HS/College that I did not have a butt. That it did not exist. Nothing. Absent. *sigh*

Brandy–this is where you come in and sing your song….!!!

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 10:53 am

we really are proud of her for being as vocal as she’s been about the image of beauty in America. and its quite interesting to watch.

Kristi: we don’t know anything. they filmed in the fall, and she returned with a contract not to tell the show’s ending. so… we wait and see.
the fact that she’s in the top 3, though, guarantees something for her. so, she’s “in” with the modeling world now.

and, yes, FIERCE is up there. thanks, tyra.

  • Kristiapplesauce // May 9, 2008 at 10:56 am

So I just went and checked out the ANTM site and Whitney is way hott. I think she looks good either way, but I for sure liked her dark features…did she go back to that, or did she keep her blond hair? Wow…I think I have lost some of my “in style” whatevers. Dang. Now I just wear cargos and pull my hair back. Oh snap. Can somebody please send me over some leather and heels?

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 11:10 am

    LOL!
she had to keep up her $8,000 extensions throughout the season. she’s been flying all over the place & making appearances. so. yeah.
we liked her darkness too. but they made her into a Miss Monroe. :)

  • Kristiapplesauce // May 9, 2008 at 11:13 am

She certainly doesn’t have to pay for that??? Does she get to keep any of the clothes or makeup? What are the other perks?

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 11:21 am

    LOL!
shoulda posted this a while ago - to moderate all your questions.
the show pays for it. and i think she does get to keep a lot of stuff.
other perks? being flown all over the stinking country.
    um
    celebritydom
    modeling contract
    being on tv
i’m sure there’s more. we talked for about 30 minutes about it over christmas. VERY interesting stuff she told me.
    so maybe she’ll win!!!!
    :)

  • Kristiapplesauce // May 9, 2008 at 11:36 am

duh. I know about the contract…I meant the inside stuff that you would know because of being family and all. Nevermind. Shutting up now. Moderate my foot.

    Re: earlier comments about bulimia.

    What is a “Monster” ?

My niece was reciently diagonsed with bulimia (she is 14.) It stems from being subjected to constant comments from her father about her weight, which has been a problem for her since she was about 4. Granted, my sister didn’t help, by enforcing the “you must clean your plate” rule, but to have her own father embarass her…that was what tipped the bucket for her.

So what would make a father do that? Was it love and concern for his daughter? Was it in an effort to make the child look less like her overweight mother and more like his trim and fit new wife? Who knows. Point is, he too was influenced by media…the need to have the ‘perfect body’.

Girls watch this stuff. Girls want to be what they see on TV. Kudos to anyone who is a true size 10 and is a model; that is an accomplishment. But my 7 year old has already started talking about wanting to make sure she stays thin. She is 7: she needs to learn to eat healthy and exercise, but she doesn’t need to obsess with her weight (she’s going to have enough going on as a teenager to have to worry about weight too!) We don’t let her watch TV. She watches less than an hour a week. I count myself lucky because this isn’t a battle. We pour in influences from books, from conversation, from scripture. As she gets older, she will see more. I don’t intend to shelter her, but I want to make sure she has a strong foundation of self worth, self respect and self image before I start allowing images on TV bombard her brain.

K…off my soapbox! Sorry for the interruption…I’ll just go quietly through the back door!

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 12:03 pm

well. i don’t know much. but i do know they only got like 2 or 3 chances to make phone calls the entire time they were filming (like two months, maybe? three?)… they couldn’t have cell phones, iPods, radios, internet, TV, etc etc etc. so. no wonder they got in fights. LOL!
    that’s all i know.
    for real.
    gotta go now… like really.
    love you, though!!!

  • mandythompson // May 9, 2008 at 12:06 pm

Lori: INTERRUPT AWAY!!! Monster is some new kind of Caffeine drink… i think. energizer, vitamins, or something. sad that the guys are getting into this now, though. REAL sad….

  • cathi stegall // May 9, 2008 at 12:39 pm

just when I thought you couldn’t get any cooler, you show up with THIS!

And, the healthy size two? yeah, bring a good gust of wind over there and we’ll take care of that competition.

  • Becca // May 9, 2008 at 1:34 pm

Monster is the equivalent to a Red Bull I believe.

  • Becca // May 9, 2008 at 1:37 pm

I find it interesting that guys are engaging in this sort of activity. Typically eating disorders for men are started in sports–specifically gymnastics and wrestling, where you have to maintain a certain weight to compete. So on the bus to the game they’ll even spit until they can’t anymore to lose water weight. It’s less methodical with counting calories, and more working out, which is acceptable for guys to do to “bulk” up, so rarely is something like that questioned.

  • alece // May 9, 2008 at 1:41 pm

i’ve never seen the show. but i’m sure i’d watch if i knew someone in it.

    cra-zee.

  • jamie b // May 9, 2008 at 3:07 pm

I am a huge antm fan and have been since the first season. I am defintely rooting for Whitney! she’s my favorite. :)

  • Giant Idiot // May 9, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I have never watched the show but I wish Drew’s cousin the best of luck. On a related reality tv note, did anyone see the epic Survivor mistake Thursday night. Probst will be able to talk about that forever.

  • tam // May 9, 2008 at 6:34 pm

    Hmmm. no - do tell???

  • boffthewall // May 9, 2008 at 9:34 pm
