“special” brownies

hey.

so way down in the comments of my recent “lurking” confession, you’ll find a comment by Kristiapplesauce requesting that i post about my favorite brownies.

first, let me say that i don’t eat this kind of special brownies.

i’m sure a lot of you have already seen this, but in case you haven’t, here’s what she’s referring to:

this video really made me think about life. about whether or not i’m really living.

i think, in Christianity, some of us check out too soon.

i go to a church that is vastly made up of grandparents. and most of them have made room for the younger generations to come in and keep the church going. our culture tells us that if we’re not young and trendy and new, then we’re not that valuable. we’re not that important. i think they might be buying into this mindset. i’d give anything for some of them to step back in. for some of them to continue to serve, give, live. sometimes i think they believe they have nothing left to offer.

some of us check out because we are going through a dry season in our faith. we haven’t “heard from God” in a while. we’ve stopped getting the goosebumps when that soloist sings on Sunday mornings. nothing has really “hit” us when we’ve spent time reading the Bible. the church sometimes tells us that if we’re not keenly aware of God, then there is something wrong with us. so we believe we are Spiritually dead. and we check out.

sometimes i think our prayers can sound like the prayers of that cop. “i think we’re dead.”

maybe we’ve allowed ourselves to be taken under the influence of something that clouds our judgment to the point of convincing us we’re already dead.

  1. There’s a great potential to fail to remember how alive we really are.

WE become dry and tired, just existing or cohabitating, instead of really truly living.

That’s when need to remind ourselves of the Fluid of life, and make that a habit.

Find those special places inside our souls that jump for joy, and do things… over and over.

..see what you made me do so early in the morning. No coffee either.

    Love you girl

  2. Oh My!!! That video is great. Love the snort at the end! A good snort gets me everytime!

Thanks for making me think past the video to the true application, that is a strength of yours!

  3. I think for some people, the longer they live, the more callous they get. The world just wears them down. Maybe the politics of the church discourage them and they stop running the race and start crawling. The younger generation could have a huge impact on some of the older folks if they would help them realize how needed they are and what a huge blessing they could be to the family of God.

  4. our culture tells us that if we’re not young and trendy and new, then we’re not that valuable. we’re not that important.

Sometimes the church tells us this too. My father was literally harrassed out of the worship leader position by a new, trendy pastor who felt he was too old to be up front. Despite the fact that he was the best musician available, with the most experience, and could sing any style desired. He was too grey and wrinkled.

I could give other examples, but it gets too discouraging. We want to appear relevant to the world, so we push to the side some of our best leaders.

  5. I thought my brownies had a funny aftertaste! ;)

Furthermore, I totally agree w/ your heart on this one…how can we develop as young adults by negating the wisdom and ignoring the years of our proceeding generations? I’d be stuck w/o the major influencers in my life! Stuck! I’d probably keep eating those brownies if it weren’t for them!

  6. Great thoughts about letting things come in and make us feel dead. That was a great video.

I hope I never tell someone I think I’m dead. For me, time usually really really really really fast.

  7. “sometimes i think our prayers can sound like the prayers of that cop. “i think we’re dead.”

There is a lesson here. Never pray on a stomach full or special brownies. Wait, maybe the lesson is that when your stomach is full of special brownies THAT is the time to pray. Either way, how about this lesson, just stay away from brownies and pray often.
