what they don’t tell you about nose rings

They DO tell you about “seepage.” Seepage is usually either red (duh) or yellow. They don’t tell you that seepage can seep both inside the nostril, or outside and collect as a little crust surrounding your shining pretty stud… and will seep for at least 2 1/2 weeks… maybe longer… (Check back with me in November.) (Or sometime in 2009.)

They DO tell you to clean it with q-tips and saline. They don’t tell you that you’ll fall in love with the ease of this process, and will begin to use q-tips to clean out both nostrils. (Go ahead. Try it. You know you wanna.)

They DON’T tell you that the hook (see picture now) can rotate OUTWARD, causing a nice shiny silver thing to hang out of your nostril. (No, I’m not taking pictures of my silver booger for your amusement.) (And if we’re ever hanging out and my silver booger is hanging out as well you BETTER tell me. kthx.)

They don’t tell you that cleaning the inside of your nose will be a rather… frustrating process. All the stuff that would normally come out with a simple blowing or wiping you will now find precariously WRAPPED around the aforementioned hook. YES. I said WRAPPED. How many q-tips does it take to unwrap it? You don’t wanna know… Especially if it’s been wrapped there all night and has lost some of its pliability and gotten all sticky. (No, I will not be taking pictures to illustrate this point, either.)

They definitely DON’T tell you that… oh… say… about two weeks after your piercing, long after the tenderness has faded, a different sort of tenderness will develop. One that will make you paranoid that an infection has developed from your negligence in properly cleaning around your nose ring. One that will bring up fears that your body is fast and fiercely rejecting this new foreign object. One that will entice you to peer into the mirror to find a swelling shiny ZIT forming in one of the offended pores.

They absolutely will not tell you that, since the threatening volcano of sebum noted above is nestled so closely to a metal object, the act of inducing an eruption is pretty much impossible. (Your only solution is to look at everyone with your head slightly turned, while praying that the left side of your face won’t explode during casual conversation.)

Enough about me. So, hey. How are you? What’s going on in your life? Any lessons learned?

Same things happened to me. I got so tired of the mountain growing…I took it out after 4 months. =/

  2. @ngie says:

Good Morning Mandy my cousin. :*) <– is a smiley with a nose ring.

You have just added fuel to the fire of my contemplation. Hm… the considering continues… to pierce or not, that is the question.

  3. okay… i’m so glad i read before i ate! :)

even with the seepage i still think noserings are cool!

  4. :*)

Mandy: FOUR MONTHS of nozits??? dang.

    Brandi: sorry. LOL!

  5. so glad that the silver booger got a cameo appearance on you.com!!!

girl…I KNOW what you are going through, and its called healing…and it really should be another 4 weeks before you can actually take it out.

I used Bactine a lot, and Uniodized sea salt…Bactine dries the gunk, even though they tell you not to use it, believe me its a whole lot easier to squirt in your nostril and turn the nose piercing then it is to take a q-tip…you still must do that process, but only once every few days instead of every.

I took mine out and lost it for good…but its fine, because none of my jobs would be cool with them anyway. Especially going for a teacher.

But what am I doing. trying to breathe. its cold in here, and I left my contacts in while sleeping, woke up with gunk all in my right eye and red, red, red right eye inside, I looked like someone had hit me in the eye, so now I feel dizzy and wonder if its because I am getting sick, or blood vessels have popped in my brain while asleep…hmmm..

yes, so that’s what I’m doing.

long time no comment! :) I’ve had to neglect the bloggy world lately for the non-bloggy world.

thought I’d mention that 1. you described the nose-piercing experience AMAZINGLY well . 2. LOVED cleaning the nose with q-tips but don’t do it anymore because all is thoroughly healed and regular nose blowing is possible. 3. I used tea tree oil on my bumpy bump. It was not a zit, but a bump that can form on body piercings, scars, things of that nature (I only knew that because I had gotten one on my ear when my cartilage was pierced) and went right away when I started using the oil. It was the only thing that worked for me. I haven’t seen it since.

can’t wait to see the haircut!

you should really consider a marketing position for a nose ring manufacturer. they’d be all over this description. i’m just sayin’ …

oh, and what happens if someone uses one of those netty pots to clear up their sinuses … does the solution ever squirt out the pierced hole? these are important issues to know. you’ve got me thinkin’ now. ;)

  9. Joy Renée says:

    HAHAHA.
    k, so this was hilarious.
alllllll except for that last paragraph. somehow, the vivid description of the sebum volcano made my oatbran taste not quite as yummy.

but hey. it was worth the laughs.

  10. I.am.totally.wheezing! Awwww, Mandy. Awwww.

  11. sarahmarkley says:

    so, that does it.

no nose ring. no silver boogers. i’ll just live with my tattoo. that actually HEALS and becomes part of your body. =*)

  12. Oh my goodness, you poor thing. I didn’t have any trouble with mine at all. Tender for the first 24 hours and then perfect after that. Hang in there!

  13. Candi says:

I’m saving this post for when my now-8-year-old wants a nose piercing. After reading this description, if she still decides she wants bling in her nose, then I’ll be all for it!

As for what I’m doing: I’m reminding myself to walk in freedom in the midst of a visit from my parents. Cooking a lot. Learning how to worship through making collages.

(BTW, what are the positive results of your new nose occupant?)

  14. Becky says:

    Hey Mandy-

I’ve had a nose ring for almost 8 years now. One of the things I had to come to terms with is the whole looking-like-you’re-picking-your-nose when you’re adjusting your nose ring. Or cleaning the junk off of it. There’s a likelihood that you will get caught with your finger up there at some point.

I never really had the seepage problem or the nozits problems (which is a hilarious term, by the way) so I guess I’m lucky. But I have been caught “adjusting things” quite often. :) You just get over it.

  15. I told my 10 year old that if she wanted one she could have one. But, I don’t think she could make it through all that. Maybe we’ll try later ;)

  16. annie says:

    Haha!!!! That was funny. :D

  17. I aim to please! And I’m a HUGE fan of informed consumerism. :) So, ya know, gotta tell the truth around here.

Now… Corrie… I think I know this bumpy bump that you speak of. Y’all excuse me while I rush to the nearest Walgreens for some Tea Tree Oil.

  18. sara says:

    O.K.THEN.

That was hilarious. And I am so grateful I went for the naval ring instead of the nose ring. There was that one time I got it caught in my jeans (you know how when you sit the front of your jeans sit higher and then you stand and they go back down by your hips? That second part doesn’t happen when the naval ring gets caught in the button hole. Ow.), but other than a little blood I had no seepage. I like nose rings, but I don’t think I could take the maintenance…

  19. Brandy says:

Oh my gosh this was hilarious. HILARIOUS!

Note to self, never ever get a nose ring. Thanks for the heads up.

And is it bad that I’ve already tried the whole clean out your nose with a q-tip trick even though I don’t have a nose ring?

  20. Brandy says:

Seriously, this is the funniest thing I’ve read in a while, and I just looked at the picture, and now it’s even funnier.

  21. charitymedders says:

I hate it that you are having a rough time with the nose ring. I didn’t have a problem at all. I actually changed mine out after 4 days. I had to put a clear stud in for work. I did try to put the hook ring back in and I about passed out..so I bought a stud that has a tiny ball on the end o keep it in. I never had any of those problems with mine. However…Alexa got her nose pierced at the same time and she had the same problems you mentioned…I guess I’m just lucky!

  22. carolyn says:

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  23. tam says:

    ditto her ^^^^^^

  24. lori says:

    Yeah…no nose ring here….e.v.e.r. I’m just sayin’

  25. alece says:

i loved “seeing” you cleaning out your nostrils with a q-tip. oh boy… that’s funny to me right now. a lot.

  26. Paloma says:

hey there. it’s been a while and this is an old post, but I had to comment. I have my nose pierced. Totally relate to EVERYTHING! I switched over to a little hoop a few months ago. way easier to maintain/clean etc.
also, love the new hair cut!
also also, went over and read tam’s story. WOW.
and (couldn’t justify another “also”) that post about your date night was adorable.

  27. Christine says:

ive been red seeping. i was getting worried. had it like two-three weeks. your description is great! lol
