I deleted it.

Ok. Confession about the post that was about to go up this afternoon. I deleted it. The whole dang thing was about the internet vs. cell phone question from the post below.

Let’s do this instead. Let’s answer this question:

Why did 4/5 of us answer that we would rather give up our cell phones than our internet? And is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Even though I didn’t have any tricks up my sleeve when putting the survey together, a few of you have asked/wondered where I’m going with all this. Well… This is definitely one place we can go. We can talk about that little teeny question.

If you haven’t gone through the survey yet, click the button below. We still wanna hear from you, and I won’t close the survey until later tonight.

I could go without my cell only b/c I don’t like talking on the phone. I know, strange, a female who doesn’t like to talk on the phone. I’d rather send texts but then again I don’t need my cell to do that.

With the internet I can imagine being in Hawaii with a click of my mouse! ;)

I can live without cellphones, cause I don’t need to contact people all the time.
Whereas with the Internet I need access all the time because of my work.

Oh boy. Is work actually more important to me than people?

  • gitz // November 19, 2008 at 2:41 pm

My answer was a little more simple than the deep thoughts some of you may have on this topic…

    I can’t leave my house. So I don’t need a cell phone. :)

But sitting in the house not being able to look at blogs, email people, Skype with my nieces and nephews, publish my own blog… THAT would actually make me feel homebound. I can use my home phone to talk to people, but without internet I would feel totally disconnected from the real world outside my door.

I picked the internet because of the more options that it gives me. I don’t have a fancy Iphone or internet on my phone so that makes a difference. Plus, with the internet you can use skype to call people and chat anyway….so I figured why not pick that :)

I can visualize more with my internet then my phone. I don’t have those iphones or anything.

The internet can take me places. Show me wonderful images. Introduce me to great music. Take me to Church Services. And if you have a phone and I have a computer we can still communicate through webphones. :)

Being a stay-at-home/homeschool mom, I can interact with far more people online than I can via my phone. And count me in as another female who isn’t crazy about talking on the phone…I’m happy to talk to my friends, but overall I’d much rather email than call someone.

Huh, can i get a woot woot for the 1/5 of us who would choose to give up the internet?!

Idk, i’m strange i guess, but i can live without internet, but my cell phone is really what i use to keep in contact with ppl. I would sure miss reading blogs, but oh well =/

  • anna // November 19, 2008 at 3:19 pm

i would go without my cell because i hate that people feel they have the right to be able to contact me 24/7. when i am peeing, i really don’t want to talk to you. or maybe i needed some time alone. or time with God… hello…
now i am off my soapbox, thank you. :0)

  • ramsey72 // November 19, 2008 at 3:33 pm

I agree with everyone else….there are more options for internet than the phone. I communicate with way more people by internet than I do by phone anyway. Even at work, the caseworkers that I deal with would rather me email them than call them. If you got a web cam then you can see who you are talking too!

this was quite a hard question for me to answer. i am thoroughly addicted to both. i check news, facebook, email, etc from my phone. i text almost constantly.

but i am probably more addicted to the internet. whenever i’m studying, i’m on aim, checking email and facebook, networking in general. i make sure to check things before i leave for the day. the internet allows me to network with more people more efficiently.

so i could more easily give up my cell, though it would still be quite difficult.

The internet is our connect to America. It allows us to talk to friends and family back home as well as gives people a visual to a place they may never have the opportunity to visit (shameless plug).

  • Brenda // November 19, 2008 at 4:33 pm

The reason that I would rather give up my cell phone for a week is because no one hardly ever calls me on it! I get so much more pleasure out of the internet than the cell phone, but if I needed help, the phone would definitely come in more handy. I could send out a cry for help in a email, but how long until someone read it?

  • mandythompson // November 19, 2008 at 5:01 pm

    Hmmm….. Interesting.

Y’all have me thinking. One thing is for sure - the internet does not replace real-life face-to-face time.

I IM’d “met-on-the-net” today… You old readers will know who/what I’m talking about. Anyway, I hadn’t had much interaction with her over the past month or so, because of traveling… But I got a good moment to catch up. I found myself wishing I could go back to that weekend where we hung out and laughed and stayed up late and joked and shared… Wishing I could have that face-to-face time.

I also got an email from a friend back home. I could hear her voice in the email, but it wasn’t the real her. It wasn’t the same…

I think I’d rather have the face-to-face. yeah. But that’s not what this whole conversation is about, is it? :) I’m just rambling. Sorry.
    Ok. Continue on.

  • alece // November 19, 2008 at 5:11 pm

i’d take the face-to-face anyday. but most days i can’t. so i rely on the internet to keep me close to those who are far.

(that sounds slightly confusing. or slightly “attempting to be poetic”. but mostly i’m just exhausted. but wanted to comment quick before going to bed!)

  • edfromct // November 19, 2008 at 5:50 pm

It was an easy question for me because I don’t own a cell phone. If I was still working or had a family then I would buy a cell phone.

If a person needs, or wants, to be in constant contact with business associates, family or friends than a cell phone might be more valuable than an internet connection.

  • Jeff M. Miller // November 19, 2008 at 5:52 pm

My answer was simple. I don’t have connectivity on my cell, only basic calling (that may change soon).

I also used to be a telemarketer (groan), and ever since then I can’t stand talking on the phone. If you’re within driving distance, I’d rather get in the car and talk.

  • Kim // November 19, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Well, for me…I’m not one of those folks with my cell glued to my ear. I don’t text or surf the net on my phone. I don’t send pictures on my phone. I basically just talk to my husband for a few minutes a week and use it to make long distance calls. We still have a land line at home.

But the internet…golly…that’s my LINK! I’d rather surf the net than watch tv (most of the time!). The net is how I hook up with super-cool people like you! :)

  • Dan Underwood // November 19, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I didn’t know which one because for work I use both equally. I chose to give up phone because Joanna said that’s what she would do (and I must agree with my wife…).

  • mandythompson // November 19, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Dan: ah huh… That sounds like a fool-proof plan, until she needed to call you one day and you didn’t have your phone. Might wanna rethink that one. I’m just sayin’…

Jeff: I’ve done the same. I think that might have something to do with my issues with phones!

  • lovewillbringustogether // November 19, 2008 at 8:45 pm

You’re weird! :-) (It’s taken me so darn long to finally figure that out!?)

As to the phone/internet question - i se it this way…

Giving up my internet would be something akin to having a frontal lobotomy/heart bypass for me, while giving up my mobile phone would be closer to cutting off a nagging wife/m-i-l.

    No Contest.

    Yeah… i know…. i’m weird too :-)

    Missed you!

  • Joy RenĂ©e // November 20, 2008 at 12:38 am

i HATE talking on the phone.
and i hate getting phone calls from unknown numbers, so i don’t answer it anyway. i just check the voicemail later.

AND….i can’t waste the same amount of time on my cell as i can online. plain and simple.

  • Cheryl@Profbaugh // November 20, 2008 at 1:40 am

I’m phone phobic. Seriously. I hate to talk on the phone. . will avoid it if I can. So this one was a no brainer for me.

The internet on the other hand. . well, I can’t live without it. My DSL at home went down tonight and I thought the world was going to end. Yes, I panicked and worked on getting it to work.

So get rid of the cell phone for a week for me, but don’t touch my internet.

  • Joe Louthan // November 20, 2008 at 2:37 am

I can talk/surf/write well on a computer that is connected to the Internet. I can’t do all things as well on a cell phone.

  • Michelle // November 20, 2008 at 12:21 pm

I don’t own a cell phone and really don’t see the need. It has to do with being homebound. Like Gitz said, the internet helps me to feel connected.
