Elvis vs. The Beatles

Do you ever have one of those nights where you wake up and have to pee? Then, stumbling to the bathroom you realize the true reason you’re awake is because you have a stomach ache, but you can’t tell if the discomfort is last night’s P.F.Chang’s talking, or a feminine issue that might need your attention? And are you thirsty because you didn’t have enough water with the plum wine at P.F.Chang’s, but you don’t wanna drink anything because it’ll just make you have to pee again in the middle of the night?

And, does all of this is happen to the tune of “I Hope You Dance” playing softly in the back of your mind? Then do you try to go back to bed, tossing and thinking of Elvis – how strange his name was – and if his parents were inspired by Elvin or Elvira or Louis or what? And then do you think about how cutting edge he was, even though his name was so strange? And then do you think about other cutting edge musicians, like The Beatles? And then do you think about how truly creative their music style was? And why they are probably the most popular rock band of all time? And then their hair? Oh the hair – all the while replaying “I Hope You Dance” in the far recesses of your mind?

And then, after unsuccessfully trying to fall back asleep, do you finally realize that it’s not the Mongolian Beef, and a few Advil would rescue you, so you get up, grab a few pills, a half glass of water, and your laptop – hoping the pain will quickly go away and you’ll finally get some sleep?

And, just when you think that you’re ready to go back to bed, you get another feeling in your stomach, and you know without a shadow of a doubt that the “I Hope You Dance” music has probably wakened the Mongolian Beef who is not too happy to be stirred at this ungodly hour of the morning?

Do you ever have one of those nights?

  1. i had one of those nights last night………so frustrating…had a conversation before bed…stirred up lots of old memories……replayed..over different..forgotten…parts………then eventually in the early hours of the morning……sleep came…….maybe its the fever with this cold…………although…your night was much more colorful :-)

  2. Uh, no. No I don’t. But thank you for that entertaining post.

You know I lived in Memphis for 4 years, right? Every August, on the anniversary of his death, there would be these dudes parachute into the city called the Flying Elvi.

    I…kid…you…not.

And I’ve been to Graceland and to his restaurant. He’s everywhere in Memphis.

  3. Well, I’m a teensy weensy over 40 and I get to pee at least 3 times a night.

Have I ever thought of Elvis? Girl!!! No. I’m not a fan. Beatles yeah, dream of them no..

When I take my migraine pill like I took last night, I have some WILD dreams.

Last night, I dreamnt I was in the car with my best friend, and we were sitting at the AW restaurant, with the waitresses with roller skates that come to your car window. I know you have never heard of this I am old.

Any ways, this chic on her skates is bringing me my Strawberry and Banana shake with extra whipped cream, she trips and …….

Don’t know I had to pee.

  4. yeah……I have them quite frequently. Apparently I called one of my friends at 11:00 last night and did not know I did until she said something to me at work this morning. That is the second time I have called someone when I was asleep. I was probably dreaming about calling her and actually did!

  5. I was a teen when Elvis come a long. I loved “early” Elvis, but after 1960 not so much.

I was a fan of the Rolling Stones more than the Beatles. I didn’t realize what great song writers Lennon and McCartney were until I heard some of their songs sung by other artists, like “In My Life” by Judy Collins.

Pre-retirement Tums was my friend. Post-retirement I sleep like a baby.

  6. Yes! – like, but not exactly the same – chinese food likes me :-) and it’s mutual.

Some of my most inspiring thoughts derive from such nights though!

Learn to let your mind wander as it will from time to time and observe carefully, rather than try to control it, is my recommendation :-)

That and go easy on the plum wine! ;-)

  7. Desperately trying to laugh quietly as hubby is sleeping peacefully in the next room….bwah ha ha ha

Nope. Don’t have nights like yours. I am blessed with wonderful, life giving, peaceful sleep. And I am deeply grateful. Of course, if Santa gives me wish #2, that ain’t gonna last.

But…the music in the background. Yup – I live with that continually.

@mandy – do you find that God is talking to you through the lyrics of the music and sometimes the music itself?
