A Night at the Boston Pops

This was fantastic. In Boston’s Symphony Hall, which is magnificently beautiful. Right down the street from Berklee School of Music, featuring a songwriting degree that I drool over incessantly.

Never been to an orchestra symphony thingy before. At one point I sat there and cried. I was overwhelmed with it all. Inspired, actually.

Here’s the top 5 things I learned:

5. I really thought a train sound was being piped into the room, then realized it was a combination of brass, snare drums, whistles, tympani’s, and strings. UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE.

4. The triangle is a surprisingly loud instrument. Surprisingly. And it takes great skill to play. And, when played well, it can make more than one sound.

3. Please, for the love of music, read and follow the Symphony Hall etiquette guidelines, noting the one that says no talking, rustling, walking, breathing, sneezing, or blinking during the performance. And, WHATEVER YOU DO, don’t be that unaccompanied teenager who trips on the stairs running out of the room while his cell phone goes off. You may never see the light of day again.

2. I want to be a conductor. If I can’t be a conductor, I SERIOUSLY want to play the tympani’s. Oh heck yes.

1. You actually have to listen. The music, as a whole, wasn’t nearly as loud as I expected. Definitely NOT a rock concert.

  1. i love that you cried! maybe because i know how rare that is (and how you crave it at times) and how much of an overflow of emotion that was for you.

yeah. i’m glad you had such a great time.

  2. the comments were beautiful and then went downhill very quickly…

… and while I was touched by the post, all I could think of was Julia Roberts crying during the opera in Pretty Woman and telling the old lady it was so good she almost peed her pants.

I may watch that movie too much.

  3. I love trains.
And I love that clashing dissonant notes can create a sound- namely those brass instruments.
It’s that clashing sound that I love oh-so much.

  4. If you like that, you need to do the Proms in London. A couple of weeks of sheer heaven. And you HAVE to do the Blue Peter prom. I don’t care how old you are. THAT will make you cry.
