Best of “Embarrassing Moments”

So I Took Tam’s Fashion Advice

Originally posted on Jan. 5, 2008

seeing as how i have a cold, and the air outside is cold, and i didn’t feel like heels: i went with a red Georgia hoodie, my favorite jeans, slip-on shoes, and a very trendy red/white houndstooth winter hat (for a splash of style – that my daddy gave me for christmas – to offset the way-too-comfortable ensemble i’d thrown together).

and, for the record, i took the fashion advice of Tam, and the rest of you who suggested i travel in comfort….

this is what came of it:

“excuse me, are you traveling unaccompanied?” the flight attendant asked me.

“i’m sorry?” i looked up, squinting my eyes — i’d been up since 4:30, had WAY too much cough medicine, and didn’t get any sleep the night before… it could all just be a dream.

“are you traveling unaccompanied?” he pointed at the empty seat beside me.

“um, yes sir.” i answered, thinking someone needed the seat…?

“do you have an envelope?” he asked….

an envelope…? i had that little sleeve thingy that you put your boarding passes in, but not an envelope. why would i have an envelope? who traveled with envelopes?

“an envelope?” i looked at him in utter confusion. maybe he was the one suffering from lack of sleep.

then HE confusedly asks, “how old are you?”

this was getting more bizarre by the second.

“me? um, i’m 29.”

[insert chuckles and laughter from everyone within earshot]

he quickly glances at his passenger roster, apologizes, and says he must have the wrong one.

oh…. i get it.

i look fifteen!

i smiled as graciously as possible, “no problem… in fact, thank you!”… i was trying not to act embarrassed.

he turned and headed up the aisle.

[insert more chuckles from nearby passengers]

i laughed and mumbled for them all to hear: “well, one day i’ll appreciate that.”

[insert hearty round of laugher #3]

after that, i quickly turned red, which i’m sure blended in nicely with my red hoodie and hat. i don’t embarrass easily. mark this one down for the records.

ps: i learned through a self-defense course to dress your kids (and yourself, women) in really bright clothing when out in public, to be spotted easily. this will deter kidnappers from snatching them or us away, and also make them easier to spot if something did happen. i actually think about this safety precaution when traveling and choose an attire accordingly, because i am painfully aware of the fact that i can look like a college student. OH the irony!!!!

    so mandy…what’s the 411?
i needs me some stats, numbers, digits on how many blog visits drew got vs. yours.
    hook a brotha up!
you “claimed” victory…but where’s the proof?
    =P

  3. Iman… Fair enough. Ok. I’ll work on it… But, this requires that he actually admit to his stats from yesterday.

I’m one to argue that the number of comments alone is proof that I had more visitors than he did. But it sounds like you want actual number of hits…

That might take some work! Will he actually tell us his??

    hmmm…..

  4. Brenda: I have YET to forget this experience!

  5. Iman:

Ok. He gave me the password to check his stats… To keep from embarrassing him, I’ll just say I’m about 3x higher, but we didn’t wanna throw around #’s… I hope this suffices… :)

Trust me. He didn’t come close.

  6. I feel you.

I’ve been asked, “Why aren’t you in school right now?” on a work day before. Um… cuz I’m 30!… but I usually just tell them something like,

“School is over-rated… I skip a lot to get attention from my mom and dad.”

    It usually shuts them up.

That is too funny. I usually have the opposite happen to me. People always think I am older than I look. I have to convince people I’m 23 but if you ask me I think I look my age.

As for the traveling bit, I like to dress trendy but comfortable. However when you spend 35 hours on a bus driving up the coast of Chile, all fashion rules fly out the window and it’s strictly sweatpants and a tanktop. :)

    This is hilarious! LOL!

When I was pg with Dylan I worked in a coffee shop and I didn’t always wear my ring b/c my fingers would swell. Anyway, a regular customer who would come in and sit and have his coffee and chat with me all the time thought I was a TEEN MOTHER. Granted I was 23 and baby faced, but STILL. He thought I was about 16.

Also, when I was about 11, my mom had me cut my hair REALLY short. Like, “Ellen” short b/c of a previous bad hair cut. I have red hair therefore my eyelashes are WHITE. I wore no makeup at 11 and I had no chest to speak of. People thought I was a boy. My mom even bought me dangly earrings so people would stop making the mistake.

    Talk about embarrassing!

  9. Jenni! No you don’t!

    Sarah: Sweatpants + tanktop = counterproductive…

Brandy: I tried not to laugh out loud about your 11-yr-old story… But, I might’ve chuckled once or twice.

  10. Theresa says:

I love that you own a houndstooth hat. :)

  11. T: I own about 7 winter hats! The same in coats, and twice as many scarves. It’s embarrassing…

  12. alece says:

since i cut my hair, nobody’s mistook me for a way-younger person.

that’s the one drawback of my new look.

  13. Lei says:

Oh, I feel you – this happens to me way too often! My mom always says that one day I’ll appreciate it . . .

To make matters worse, besides me looking much younger than my years my dear parents were on the older end when I came along. More than once has a stranger commented on how nice that I’m out with my grandparents – lol!

  14. Wait…why haven’t I heard of this before? Was this recent? I love it.
