02.1: Life is What it Is

Had the privilege of putting this together with Tam this week… I nearly finished the lyric on the plane ride into Oregon, then tweaked things with her this week.

You’ll see that I used a LOT of your suggestions on this one. Thank you! This process is really refining me. More on that later.

Here it is:

I used to think that I was superhuman
Could do anything if I put MY mind TO it
Then life came along and kinda had to ruin …
It all

We all have a story
and it’s all been told before

This life is what it is
This life is what it is
The ups and the downs
The hits and the misses
This is life…
Life is what it is.

Some people believe their glass is half empty
They’re others who know they’ve been given plenty
But we’re not livin… if we’re not drinkin
It all

Chorus
This life is what we make of it
This life is what we take from it
The ups and the downs
The hits and the misses
This is life… life is life
This is life & life is what it is.

  1. Hey!
    That was great.
The harmony was perfect- I love that she didn’t sing on the last note of the chorus.
And I love that you used my chord suggestion. Thanks. That means more than I can explain, kinda. (makes me feel like a valid musician for one thing!)

I can’t wait to hear it “produced”, all mixed and everything.

Great job. You did a phenomenal job on this.

  2. i am learning so much from how open you’re being with all this song-writing stuff. soliciting feedback and then utilizing it to improve your stewardship of the gift(s) God gave you. yeah, i can learn muchly from you.

this came out great. i heard something in your voice i hadn’t heard before. and i love it.

i’m flooded with fond memories of sitting around for jam sessions with friends. and i love that you and tam got to share that with each other. cause there’s nothing like it in the whole wide world.

  3. THIS.IS.MY.NEW.THEME.SONG.

I love what you both did with it, and love that it has the voice and soul of both of you in it.

Now, when it’s finished, how can I get it to stream on my blog? Because I’ll take down my last.fm and just put up your music :)

Did I mention that I love this? And love you? And loved talking to you? Such talent and heart in you, girl.

And as soon as I can actually talk and breathe again, I’m so going to work on sounding Southern :)

  4. Mandy I loved that! I like the lyrics and the melody, but my favorite thing about it was how fun it was to sing along with it. Now, you should know that in my book, a sing-along song is a really big deal.

A song that draws me in and gets me singing along without getting stuck in my head in an annoying way: even better! Plus it made me want to do the song somewhere. That is fantastic! I think that when people hear your music and feel a level of ‘ownership’ it means they are connecting with you and with the heart of your song.

    You’ve got it, girl.

  5. You two sound great together! You need to move by each other so you can sing all the time. :) The song sounds great and I love the message! Maybe next time a trio with Tam’s daughter too…she has a great voice! Fun times I am sure!

  6. Just heard the song and the two of you over at Tam’s…

    Naturally, i love it.

I was struck though with how powerful the link could be between the ‘Hits and the Misses’ and ‘This is – life’.

If you’re completely happy with it the way it is then ignore me, but i think it might sound ok as :

…hits and the misses (empty beat) This is (empty beat) – Our Life! (Guitar riff)

And i’m glad that you and Mr Guitar hung around together long enough for this one! ;-)

I wonder what a drum solo would/could add to the song???

  7. ok

there’s always going to be one, isn’t there?

I prefer the first version prechorus and chorus.

Love Tam’s voice – really enjoyed the worship session with the two of you together, love her coming in on “It all” but want much more of just your voice on this one.

Oh well. Just my two cents. Still looking forward to hearing the studio version.

  8. And – oh worse – much worse – eek – I preferred it when it didn’t get happy. Or make sense. It just was. But…I realise there’s a fine line that Christian artists have to walk. And have no good ideas, so shouldn’t bring a problem when I don’t have a solution. Sigh.

  9. :) Louise! Yes, there’s always one. Thank you for those comments… I really do consider everything that everyone mentions in here. And, you know, my “happy” p0int wasn’t nearly as happy as some might’ve liked: basically, life is crappy sometimes and we can’t change it – the only thing we can change is what we do with that crap. Happy? maybe volitional – empowering, but I wouldn’t directly say happy.

  10. louise – i agree about hearing me less and more of mandy. thats a no brainer ;)

i think i shouldve stayed out on the first two lines of the chorus and just come in on “the ups and the downs….” maybe even less than that.
