  1. Thank you, Mandy. Although you cheated quite a bit, not made from “scratch” like my grandmother’s, it looked REALLY good! Must try the “easy” way.

Lima beans are the best!!! No okra…fried okra would be a perfect compliment, don’tcha think?

I think I know what we’re havin’ for dinner!

  2. Red: Okra? YES. Blackened. In a cast iron skillet. You know how to make it that way? :) I was wondering if somebody would call me out on all the “cheating” but Tam didn’t know any better!!!!

  3. HAHAHA! How could she? You know, she’s really NOT Southern anymore, I mean, Missouri…really?! That’s considered the MidWest, isn’t it?

YES!! Blackened and in a cast iron skillet! Can’t get much better than that! Well, actually, stewed okra’s pretty great too. ;)

  4. It all looks very very yummy. If Michelle hadn’t brought it up then I would have mentioned as well that you can actually do all of that from scratch, especially when necessity demands it. My kids love my chicken and dumplings.

Thanks to the whole team for a sharing a lovely experience. :-)

  5. um, mandy pants….i kinda had a feeling that most dumplins were made from scratch. dumplins came out way before grands buttermilk biscuits.

    hello!!!

  6. Now…now…now see…up here…in…in the north…we…we don’t gun call ‘em dumplin’s. We…we don’ do that. Up here in the northeast…actually, the North-North/East-East…we call it “Granny’s Chicken Soup.” Which, see, is also known as “That Chicken Soup Mom Used To Make.”

So, see, where I come from…there is no such thin’ as “dumplin’s.”

I mean, “dumplin’s?” That must be a Georgia name. Cause, see, that’s what everybody does when they’re DONE eatin’, ya know? They, like, dump. And everybody knows if “The Devil Went DOWN To Georgia”…Well, that place must be, ya know, like, a dump.

Plus, whenever Granny made Her Chicken Soup, she made the biscuits from scratch. And so to use them thar “store bought” buscuits…nobody ever did that. It just ain’ Granny’s Chicken Soup without them thar homemade biscuits.

And that concludes today’s cooking lesson, straight from Alabama-In-The-Middle-Pennsylvania!

  7. holy crap. are y’all even gonna go there?

soup? there’s nothing soupy about those chicken & dumplins…. granny called ‘em soup? Nor. are you sure you have your story straight?
dumplins are what they are: southern.

  8. Once you say the words “butter and bacon” whatever you make is going to be great with me.

This was my kind of cooking, excuse me, cookin, since everything came in a can or package.

It was nice to see how polite Kass was when you asked her if she like it – “Interesting.”

I enjoyed the cookin lesson and look forward to seeing the next one, as long as it does not have grits in it. I love southern food, but not grits.

  9. Now Miss Mandy! WE called it “SOUP”!!!

    Granny called it “dinner.”

And that Worcestershire sauce we called “This STUFF”!!! Cause we couldn’t pronounce the dern name!

And, Yes, I’m sure I have my story strate!

(Even if my spellin’ is so, yanno, “SOUTHERN!!!” ;) )

  10. I know it’s been a couple months since you posted this, but I HAD to comment. I’ve made chicken and dumplings from scratch and also using the frozen dumplings. Both ways turned out exactly like the dumplings I grew up with and were super yummy.

Then I made chicken and dumplings YOUR way. Know what my hubby said???…”I don’t even care if you put any chicken in them next time!” See, unfortunately we’re ALL about some carbs here at the Monteith house. We now have a favorite way of making chicken and dumplings! Those were absolutely a.maz.ing.
