23: Honey (“Hector Hector” cont’d)

When we left Hector Hector, he finally landed a job as a nectar collector. He was so pitiful that even the bees felt sorry for him.

(Warning: This is so far beyond anything I’ve ever written, but it’s gonna get weird if I’m working towards 100, right? I hope this isn’t your first impression of my music – because this is very… um… silly?)

The bees were being nice to him
They let him work and earn a wage again
Because they saw the good
Hector could be
Sweeter than HONEY
Sweeter than HONEY

Hector was walking down the street one day
saw a girl he’d like to meet so he’d say
“Hello my name is hector
I sell nectar and HONEY
I sell HONEY”

She said, “Well Honey’s my name too
You seem kinda silly and a little cute
If you want to call me
….you can call me HONEY
Call me HONEY.”

That day Hector finally found the truth
found what would satisfy his sweet tooth
Hector found his
Hector found his HONEY
Found his HONEY

  1. Why do I love this song so much? I just do. It is just great to be silly sometimes. So thanks for that.

  2. Susan says:

Just TOO silly and fun. I’m so glad to have posts to make me laugh this morning.

    Thank You.

  3. You’re welcome and you’re welcome!

  4. ckroboth says:

I see a whole “Hector” Album in your future.

Album title “Hector, Honey, and Bees”

Or you could make a Pseudo Band name called “Hector and the Honey Bees” and produce the album. Maybe then a movie could be made like “Spinal Tap” Just saying…

    :D

  5. Becca says:

    HA.
I like where you’re going with this, Ckroboth. . . Hahah.

  6. David says:

Oh this is brilliant. CPKIII is definitely onto something with the album/band thing…

Yes; weird, funny…but also cool cool harmonies on “Honey”, and a great throwback to the early 80s instrumentally.

It’s screaming out for a longer wig-out to finish, so Hector and his honey can really go wild in the accompanying video. Ha!

  7. carrie says:

it’s good to break out of the norm…you never know where it will lead later.

  8. Peter Park says:

You should submit the song to veggie tales. Love your voice.

  9. darla says:

I like it! cute, sweet..a little Arlo Guthrie sound with ELO mixed in..hahaha its cute, and your voice is delightful..just as all the rest said..your head is not getting too big is it?? what the hey? go for it!

    • Don’t know who Arlo Guthrie or ELO are…? But, thanks! As for my head getting too big? Not a chance. I’ve never felt more inept as a songwriter. The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don’t know or do.

  10. Ed says:

Love the music, it perfectly fits the whimsical nature of the song. Really enjoyed your singing, especially the way you draw out the word “Honey” in the chorus.

It made me thing of the Beach Boy song “Wild Honey”.

Bob Dylan wrote some of the most serious songs I can think of, but he also could have fun with “Rainy Day Women”.

Trying something completely different shows how much you are willing to challenge yourself artistically.

  11. Marisa says:

I like it! Like Ed said, especially the way you draw out the word “Honey.”

The music fits so perfectly with the lyrics.

    :)

  12. M & Ed: One thing I’m learning is that the tone of the words and the melody/music should match. I’ve been working hard on that! Excited to hear I’m moving in the right direction. Thanks y’all.

  13. Sharon Mac says:

girl, did I ever mention that I can’t hear any of your music anymore? It just stays at Buffering! LAst 5 songs or so have been like that. :-(

  14. Uncle Freddy says:

Yep, that’s pretty different compared to your other work! Sounds like it was fun to record. Actually, it’s not that bad.

  15. Call me Crazy… but i like ‘Hector’s songs just about the most of all your works i’ve heard – they make me feel GOOD, happy, and younger. ;-)

I like the contrast between the fast pace of the synth and the slower pace of the lyric/chorus.

It really seems to give the image of ‘buzzy’, busy bees working hard flappin their wings like crazy while ‘bumbling’ slowly along from flower to flower to gather the nectar.

I hope you cut this song ‘short’ ( 2.29 ain’t so long) as per David’s noticing in order to leave room for the ‘other’ songs to continue Hector and Honey’s story?

You’ve never heard of Arlo (or Woodie?) Guthrie? Electric Light Orchestra?? Modern education standards seem to be sadly lacking over there… or did you cut school to practice your gee-tar playing? ;-)

How’s the drum thing coming along? Did Kota teach you any cool riffs? ;-)

    • Love: I have no formal music education, so if Arlo or Woodie weren’t a massive element of pop music during my life time (nor were highly famous Folk/Disco artists) then I probably missed them… Sorry to disappoint you. But glad to hear that you are a fan of Hector!

  16. We have those in common – i have no formal music education and i am sorry to ‘disappoint’ you. (where exactly did i say i was disappointed???)

Further, neither Arlo nor Woodie were a massive element of pop music during my lifetime (Although ELO did put out a few ‘Big’ Hits in the Seventies often played on radio after that time) and somehow i’d heard of them even though they are American (where you happen to come from i believe?) and to the best of my limited knowledge never spent much time in either England, where i spent the first part of my childhood, nor in Australia where i lived the rest of life so far.

There is no reason to assume that i am anything other than surprised that i had known of them and you apparently did not.

I just believed they were somewhat ‘famous’ and if there fame had spread all the way down here it might have found it’s way to you also.

Woodie was Arlo’s father and his best known song is probably “This Land Is Your Land”, which is regularly sung in American schools even today i believe. Arlo currently lives in Washington, Massachusetts (do you know it?) and his most popular song was ‘Alice’s Restaurant (Msssacre)’ one of the longest ever songs to gain any kind of international ‘popularity’ (longer even tha Don Mclean’s American Pie)- it’s amazing what you can find on the ‘net ;-)

I believe your talent to create music is superior to my talent for remembering trivia. I’m sorry of my humour doesn’t always ‘fit’ on your radar.

And i have to correct another misunderstanding of yours…

i’m not a fan of Hector – i pointed out that i like YOUR work, not his! ;-)

i know it is so easy to do when there is no face to face contact, but it is of no ‘comfort’ to me when people misunderstand what i write or have to comment on.

it happens more often than you’d ever believe – to my great sadness – by people i thought might know me ‘better’ :-(

  1. [...] I give you another HECTOR HECTOR song. To refresh your memory, Hector fell victim to the recession, then fell into the pitying hands of some bees, who let him collect nectar. Most recently, Hector met Honey. [...]
