32: Day is Done

About a month ago, I was overloaded with work and life, and wrote most of this song in my head on a work-filled Friday. I just found the time to finish it, and it may be one of my favorites so far.

(One thing I’d like to change, is the double usage of “you” – I’ve got two “yous” in this song, which is such a no-no, unless the “you” in the third verse can be the moon as well. But, in my head, that “you” is the listener. Anyway, it’s close enough for now. I’ve already moved on to song #32.)

I thought it’d make your Monday a little brighter.

Lyrics:

Day is done.
Gonna rest my head & watch the sun set.
Gonna leave all my cares to rest
When this day is done.

Day is done.
No more worries. No more race to run.
Just to live and laugh and love someone
when this day is done.

OH MOON WON’T YOU SHINE DOWN ON ME.
OH MOON KEEP ON SMILING FOR ME.

Before tomorrow’s begun
Gonna kick back and have a little fun.
If you see me, you know the night has come
and this long day is done.

  1. I really really like this song.

It was funny because you were transporting me to the end of the day when I haven’t even started the day.

But in my head I saw the video already..

    Great song!

  2. And can I just add that I don’t like what this program does to smiley faces. Actually what it does is blatantly remind me of how excessively I use them. And I don’t like that. (See? Almost put another one there.)

  3. YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

I think this song is what lies in the shadow of the statue.

First, this one is right behind May God Arise for me in terms of favorites. Anytime I listen and can’t help but close my eyes and move my head with the slightest grin of appreciation… it’s a good song for me.

Second, I’m just wondering if you can make a quick trip to Oregon to include it on the new cd.

In case I forgot to mention it, I might have liked this song a little bit. You should sell it to Joss Stone.

  4. I don’t know what double you’s you are talking about – but this song is seriously amazing and I love it and you are full of amazing talent and fierce fire. Thank you for this one. Really.

  5. I really like this song. You did a great job on the vocals and the guitar.

It is interesting that writing a song is like writing a business report, in that it is important to not keep repeating words. Being creative and finding different words to use helps keep the report more interesting.

Maybe I should have sung my reports to the board. :)

    • You’re right, Ed! We have to keep it interesting… But, at the same time, repetition is the best way to get a point across… How many times do I have the phrase “day is done” in there? a lot…

      • I really do love it! As for suggestions, I do think it could be longer – not necessarily words (though a bridge would be cool) but a few measures of instrumental or something would help it feel more full I think.

  6. You know what I love about this? That I read the lyrics first, and then the actual song sounded JUST like I imagined it would. Perfect.

    • Will do! I originally wanted it to sound even more “gospelly” with organ or piano, but then realized that TOTALLY didn’t fit the lyrics. It’s not a preachy song, but it is a “soul” song. So, guitar it is!

  7. Love it Love it Love it!!!! I too can see the video – I see campfire, cowgirl boots and the beautiful sunset on the beach!!!!! What do you think, girlie girl??

    We miss you down here!

    Love ya and BLESS you!

  8. Ok, this is probably my favorite song you have written. It is gritty, dirty and clear in purpose.

And I so love the scratchy record player sound in the background. Very nice touch!
