31: The Speed of Life (aka: Mandy’s first hip-hop song)
A few weeks ago, I put in a request for some song ideas – one song a month for y’all. First up is RUSS’s killer backbeat. He sent me the music and wanted me to provide the lyrics. Ergo, my first attempt at a hip-hop song.
Kickin’ it old school, with Russ Hutto bringing the flow and music:
This human race ain’t lap by lap
it’s one long line – one long track
ya can’t turn around – ya can’t rematch
ya gotta take each chance to close the gapYa gotta run this race to win it
Ya gotta live the life you’re given
Don’t go nowhere if you ain’t driven
by dedication. decision. on a mission.(This is)
The Speed
of Life
The Speed
of LifeWe’re not living // if we’re not moving // at the speed of life.
These moments only come once
as soon as they’re here, they’re (just) a trail of dust
Love is a choice but life is a must
We gonna get it right. We gonna mess it upDon’t let nothing stop ya
To hear the beat, ya gotta drop it.
There ain’t nothin out there to block it
that’ll clock it like you rock it(This is)

Heck yes!
Love it girl. Enjoyed the collaboration as well. We gotta do this some more!
I agree. We do need to do this again! Lemme know when you have another track to work with!
um. that was pretty cool.
Thanks!
OK, that was beyond cool – way awesome. Russ, I love the trumpets – it adds something to make it fresh and new .. not rap, not just regular hip-hop, not ska … very cool.
Thanks, Fred. I haven’t played in many a year, but when I pick it up, my chops give me about 10 minutes to work with…then they turn to mush.
Very Gorillaz-ish.
That was quite hip and it made me want to hop. Despite my being white and nerdy. Thanks for sharing this! I’d say you should release the next one faster, but that seems counter to the point of this song
There will be more… I’m sure of it!
That’s awesome!
Love it!
(Am I the only one whose shoulders where shaking?)
no. mine were too! some things, you have to move to!
We’re movin’ we’re movin’…
Ok. I have no choice but to confess right here and now that I was TOTALLY goofin’ off when I put all those extras in there, Russ. And then they just kinda… worked…?
diggin it. very original! like fred said. its definitely its own thing. which is good.
im gonna start calling you…
lil-man
or
mandiva!
Can I have a rap name too?
lil-man IS your rap-name…
Very cool… I’m with Travis up there… gorillaz or even further back- it reminds me of Cake, if anyone remembers them!
oh yes. I could hear Cake in there a little.
I can hear the cake in ther too. I am with you guys.

Cake! Don’t remember them, so I checked them out. haha. Yep. That’s it.
You guys did a great job on the song. I loved both the music and lyrics, especially.
“These moments only come once

We gonna get it right. We gonna mess it up”
Did I hear a “come on you’all” in the background near the end?
Can’t wait for the C/D to come out.
Y’all, Ed. Not You all…. Y’all!
I guess it is more challenging for me to speak southern than for you to sing hip hop.
HAHA! At least we both know our limitations!
Album title (if not already decided)
“a trail of dust”
or
“just a trail of dust…”
Oh, and I really enjoyed the song!
Already decided… But did you dance? That’s what I wanna know!!
working on this with russ must’ve been a blast!
It was so much fun!!! I’m hoping we do a new one soon!
trying to decide how to spell awww yeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh the way it sounds here.
take my word for it, i sound very street.
great job, girlie.
I felt like the biggest poser!!!
Cool song! I want to add it to my workout playlist
Very Gorillaz-ish, I agree.
Very cool!
Thanks Janaki & Marisa!
Russ and Mandy, I like that a lot!
fan.freaking.tastic. love the beat.
You are a woman of many many talents!
Gitz! Glad you liked it.
Russ provided the beat ~ I just gave him the words to rap. It was a challenge, to say the least.
