Apples to Apples

Drew and I have been trying to get healthy this summer. Less caffeine. Less sugar (well, not the kissin’ kind). Less carbs. Less eating. More exercising.

I’m stocking up on salads and fruit.

I like fuji apples.

A lot.

I know some people might see them as a deviation from the norm, but I don’t care. I like fujis, no matter how weird you think I am. I thought they were weird, until I tried them. Sweet heaven. I left those bitter Granny Smiths behind, and I don’t regret it one bite (err, I mean, bit)!

What sort of apple person are you?

  1. I don’t like Fuji, or Pink Lady, or Red Delicious, or Jonathan for exactly the reason you like them : Sweet.

Therefore, I’m a Granny Smith guy (which fits with my love of sour candy too). They’re also Australian, so I gotta support local ;)

However, my absolute favourite but they are so hard to find are Green Girl. I had them in Tasmania in 2005 and I’ve never seen the since, or been able to find any info on the net about them (not that I’ve really tried that hard)

But there’s so many apples on this list I’ve not tried yet…how do I know which one I really am.

  2. I’m a braeburn kinda gal who also enjoys fuji apples and golden delicious. Granny Smith apples are for baking, imho.

  3. I went to the All About Apples site and their list of over 200 varieties, with a link to a brief description of each apple.

I have got to find out where they sell “Bacon” apples. “A beautiful apple that has lively, juicy flavor and is good for baking, it does not keep extremely well.”

I think I might stay away from the “Chisel Jersey”. The garden state of New Jersey can’t get a break even with apple names.

Anyone who knows me would probably say I am a “Goof”.

I could have inherited some of the traits of the “Kerry Irish Pippin” from my fathers family. I did have an uncle who was more like the “Sops of Wine”.

I have made many “Maiden’s Blush” and I am clearly not a “Puritan”.

I think if I had to pick one I would like to be like it’s the “Rambo”. At my stage in life however I think I am either a “Autumn Gold” or a “Chestnut Crab” depending on which of my neighbors you talk to.

Mandy, you might favour the “Scarlet O’Hara”.

  4. Pink Lady – beautiful colour and pretty to look at, crisp, lovely and sweet and just a teeny hint of ‘tarty’ – what’s not to love? ;-)

Beats a coffee as a morning pick-me-up anyday of the week :-)

    Better value too! Living food.

  5. I’m partial to the odd Braeburn, I like ‘russeted’ apples. I would only use Granny Smith’ to cook with only because I can’t get the same apples from home – Bramleys. You can’t even eat them raw as they are mouthpuckering, but they make apple tarts exactly how I like them…tart!

County Armagh in Northern Ireland used to be renowned for it’s apple growing, but all that has changed now. Stupid homogenisation and supermarket food. :-/

My main complaint? So hard to get an apple that actually tastes like an apple, as opposed to a vaguely apple-scented turnip. Which brings me to the one David mentioned, the Green Girl. Fresh fruit & veg from Tasmania = A-MAY-ZING.

I’d like to try a Court Pendu Plat as they are meant to date from Roman times. History + food = win.
