No-Net Survival Tips

I think I’ve been without internet at home for … oh… about two weeks. (13-

days-to-be-exact-but-who’s-counting?)

If I tell someone “I’ll have to check it later, I don’t have internet at home anymore,” they look at me like my head just fell off. I get these shocked stares, and the inevitable question: “Really? What do you do?”

  • I download SuperTuxKart.
  • I read an actual book – with pages and everything.
  • I talk to Drew.
  • I straighten up our house.
  • I notice when the leaves of my begonia start to droop.
  • I miss checking blogs like I used to.
  • I go for a walk.
  • I send tweets from my cell phone, and half of them don’t go through but-I-don’t-know-because-I-don’t-have-internet-at-home.
  • I write more songs.
  • I play SuperTuxKart when I need a mind break from writing.
  • The write more songs.

All in all, I think I’m doing alright…

I’m not yet convinced that I want internet back. But, heads up, the new neighbors are moving in today – and have already offered to share wi-fi with us.

(everyone breathe a collective sigh of relief)

So. What would YOU do if you didn’t have round-the-clock wi-fi access?

Start/Finish: Rhyme

To grow as a songwriter, I’ve made intentional efforts to expand my rhyming skills. I get stuck in the same rhyme ruts over and over again… I scratch and dig my way out of those ruts, brush off the mud, and continue on with broader words, bigger imagery, and brighter creativity.

Here’s an idea. Let’s play a game today – a rhyme game where we either start a phrase, or we finish a phrase. (get it? start/finish…?) The finishing phrase has to rhyme with the starting phrase.

Since we have this fun stacked comment thingy, we can leave comments doing both! (insert wild applause here)

You have either two options:

  1. start a phrase in a comment
  2. finish a phrase, by hitting “reply” to the comment

I Don’t like Groups

Ignoring the fact that I don’t really like group activities, I actually decided to hang out with a bunch of fabulous seminary wives on Sunday night.

They just so happened to plan the “girls’ night out” at my favorite local restaurant. How could I say no?

Even though I was ten minutes away from finishing a fabulous movie, I freshened my makeup, grabbed my fashionable-yet-cheap burnt orange purse, and headed out the door in time to meet them.

We went.
We laughed.
We chatted.
We laughed some more.
And then we drove ourselves home.
Laughing all the way. (ha ha ha) (Sorry. I just had to.)

Even though I’ll saw most of these amazing women at small group the following day, the evening was different. The atmosphere was different. The conversation was different. (Did I mention that I don’t like groups? This group experience was… different.)

It was, surprisingly, exactly what I needed.

So, what’s up with you? Had any unexpected surprises lately?

41. The Faith of a Nine-Year-Old

Remember how I said I wanted to get ideas/thoughts/suggestions from y’all? And try to write a song from that each month? You don’t? That’s ok. I almost forgot, too. Kinda like how Tam always forgets to line somebody up for her Thursday Swap post on her blog.

Anyway, Carl sent me some lyrics that his daughter wrote, and I fit them to music. I did have to re-work the phrasing a bit, but I don’t think I added a single word. Just used hers.

I was happy to do this for him. I owe him, since he’s the one that talked me (and consequently, Brent) into adding another song to my album.

This was a fun experiment for me. Hope you like it:

I’m walking down a street so lonely
I’m walking down a street so lonely
I’m walking down a street and I see God
I run to Him I run to Him

And I am smiling – I am laughing
People looking – my hope is here in God
I am walking – I am humming
God is watching – my hope is here in God
My hope is here in God

I look around and it’s an empty street
Only me & God beside me
I smile & laugh – no ones looking at me
God is with me – God is with me

I am smiling – I am laughing
People looking – my hope is here in God
I am walking – I am humming
God is watching – my hope is here in God

I go to God – I go to God – the story never ending
I can be myself

I am smiling – I am laughing
People looking – My hope is here in God
I am walking – I am humming
God is watching – My hope is here in God
My hope is here in God
