88. Broken

This song will go down as one of my favorites of the year. Right up there with 40 More Falls and a few others. That’s ok to say, isn’t it? I mean, I’m not saying it’s a good song. I’m just saying I think it’s one of my not-so-bad ones. Let’s try again: This song isn’t nearly as crappy as most of the songs I’ve written this year. It sits on the “less-crappy list” right up there with 40 More Falls and a few others.

There. That’s better.

The song surprised me. It became more than I thought it would. I’ve wanted to write a song like this for a while – a song about the depravity of man – about the general brokenness of our souls – about how we’re all messed up in some way. All of us. Undeniably. It’s darker than I thought it would be, but dark enough to get the point across. Maybe this is an Ash Wednesday song. Maybe.

If I had time, I’d bring in a few other elements of sound to amp the pre-bridge section. Maybe I’ll put that on the to-do list for 2010.

Love to hear your thoughts:

(And if any of you are wondering: No, I haven’t finished a single song this week. I’ve been fighting a head cold that has left me stranded on the couch watching an entire season of Survivor. And I think that’s ok. My mind is resting, and I expect to bury these last 5 very soon. VERY soon.)

1, i think that’s definitely okay. we know when we do well and when we don’t. most of us. haha.. ;)

2, i like the feel of this song. i don’t think it’s too dark. or really all that dark at all. maybe i’m just a little too dark. haha.

    also. good production.

Sounds like Stevie Nicks. I love it. Theological note: anytime you’re talking about the depravity of man, you gotta write/sing in a minor key. It should be required.

I love this. It’s not “less crappy” … it’s really good. Own it, woman.

    I love it.

My son Elij(who likes it too) says you definately could wire this song up with electric guitar and drums/piano or make it acoustic by have bongo drums/ or even a cello he says in the background… I have no clue what he’s talking about. But I promised him I would write it.

I’ve continued to hear drums in this – just haven’t had the time to put it together… & tell him the Cello is a GREAT idea. Whew…. Lots of dark mellow depth. yep He’s right!

LOVE THIS SONG! New favorite! Not too dark..just seems appropriate!
I’d love to hear some alto harmony in the part around 2:25…would really bring some depth…maybe some tenor, but I could really hear the alto in my head! Go figure, huh? :)

Really like it, Mandy. It made my producer imagination go wild. This is one I would love to produce.

ummmm… I can’t get it to play… but as soon as I am able I will letcha know. Excited to hear, heard about it at a bonfire tonight!

It goes down as one of my favorites that you have written. Very stylistic and you presented it in a way that is easy for the imagination to ” run Free”. By that I mean I had about a dozen production ideas along with many images running through my mind. Good job! It’s a gem for sure.

In my humbled opinion, probably the most interesting tune you’ve written. It does remind me of some of Fleetwood Mac’s late 70’s output, like “Gold Dust Woman” or “The Chain”, but in a good way. Given that Fleetwood Mac’s RUMORS is in my top 10 albums of all-time list, I suppose that’s a compliment. ;-)

I really like songs where it somehow humbles us and in the process glorifies God. This is definitely one of them. And it reminded me of the song Borne by Not by Sight. So yeah, just wanted to say I really like this song too.

haha! Definitely would love to help out! :)
I agree with Shannon…totally reminds me of a Gold Dust woman-ish feel! Love it!

I did a quick search of the comments to see if I was the only one thinking Fleetwood Mac, apparently not. :-)

I dig the tune. I really like the dirty, metal sounding, open tune guitar sound. I wasn’t loving the delay, or whatever that it is, but as the song goes on I like it and get it!

Nicely done. One of my favs

Definitely hearing the late 70s Fleetwood Mac thing. I really like the loose structure.

And your voice was made for minor keys Mandy. This is in my list of faves from you too.
