my posts are about to get shorter…

“Lets have a typing speed contest,” he mocks as he hops up from the couch. He’d just waited out my painfully long hunt-and-peck session to type out the title of this post.

[I start a timer.]

Why is he mocking me? Because I am about fifty words into using the Dvorak keyboard layout. It is designed for more efficient and healthy computer typing. (Apparently, the traditional design was for typewriters.) I figured that, as much as I use my hands, I need to take good care of them.

The “A” and numbers are the only symbol keys that haven’t moved; and I am having a really hard time remembering where the “K” is.

[Entering the Dvorak link in the post up there.]

124 words so far plus the link in 11 mins, 54 secs = 10+ words per minute.

I used to type 62 wpm… 72 on a good day.

How fast can you type? Test it HERE.

  1. and from experience…do not confuse the K for the L when typing the word “beautiful”.

    im a terrible typer.

no need to take a test to confirm that.

  2. I use to do 65 wpm – now that i have Parkinson’s disease I have to use my left hand only. My right hand shakes so bad that I have to keep it even off the shift key. It took me three minutes to type just these two lines.

  3. okay…I am such a sucker for typing and typing games–I used to (still do randomly) play typershark for hours. I don’t know how many times I did this one, but the highest I got so far was 92…so want that elusive 100 :) I would definitely love to try out that keyboard! sounds like fun :)

  4. 50 words (adjusted)

I am slipping. Although I was never as good at doing on screen tests. I used to be able to make 65-70 typing without a script. (ie from dictation or memory)

These fins are jsut too short to make it any higher. :-)

  5. that keyboard makes my head hurt!!! There is no way I’d be able to reprogram my brain for that. no way! LOL! It’d get thrown through a window.

I read about WHY there is a keyboard like that, but I still don’t get it. hmph.

  6. thanks for the fun challenge. Tried it twice, got 64 and 70 wpm. I like the concept of the Dvorak layout, but don’t think I would have the time to invest in relearning how to type.

  7. im a fast typer. been a computer user since i was little, and had those practice typing programs early on. i think i average 70ish. 65 if there are too many big words. typing tests stress me out…so i don’t want to do it right now. i don’t even need to look at the keys except for the bottom row rare letters once in a while, and to make sure i’m on homebase…
