- The Bible – because it takes a LONG time to read the whole thing – and it’s more of a compilation work than one long story (although my husband might differ with me on that last point haha)…
- Francine River’s “Redeeming Love” – it’s mah fave.
- A blank notebook (it’s a book!) so I can write songs & stuff.
- The Telephone Book. Seems useful, if only for fires & toilet paper & such.
- “How To Survive on a Deserted Island” – I’m sure that book exists. And I’d definitely want it with me.
You’re stuck on a deserted island. You get to have 5 books with you. What are they?
P.S. I have a good bad habit of stealing post ideas from Hannah.
P.P.S. after the first ps: That last book DOES exist: here
P.P.P.S. Can I substitute my MacBook for #2, since it actually IS my favorite “book?” [grin]
Hmm. I’d like to have:
5) Death in the Long Grass. I don’t know why I love this book so much. Maybe it’s because it just oozes testosterone and manliness. Seems like it would be good reading material in a deserted island scenario for any guy…to keep them in manly form.
4) Lord of The Rings. It’s a good story. Long and interesting. You could read it through and then start over and forget what happened at the beginning.
3) Protein Power. Seriously. I love the writings of the Drs. Eades. They are a husband and wife team who battle the diseases of civilization (diabetes, obesity, heart disease, etc.) armed with high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb nutritional information. Brilliant. And when you’re on a desert island there are no twinkies so it’s a good read that might spark some ideas about food choices. http://www.amazon.com/Protein-Power-High-Protein-Low-Carbohydrate-Health–/dp/0553380788/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284085038&sr=1-1
2) The Bible. Yeah, it’s actually not my number one choice, and I’m not afraid to say it. I will, as humbly as possible, say that I believe that after a lifetime growing up in church and reading and hearing every book of the Bible many times, I am confident that it’s written in my heart. Maybe not word for word. But the Truth is tattooed on my being. I could live out my life on a deserted island without a single physical page.
1) Les Stroud’s Survive. I am a big fan of Survivorman. I think it’d have some good tips in there as well. http://www.amazon.com/Survive-Essential-Skills-Tactics-Anywhere/dp/0061373516/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1284084939&sr=1-1
My honorable mentions are any star wars novel. Any.
#3 might make you eat worms and bugs all day, just FYI….
And, I think it is SO fascinating that you started with #5. Do you count backwards all the time, Russ?
Everyone knows that great top lists are always conted down backwards! It creates suspense and momentum!!
I think I’d be ok with bugs!
I’m sure they’d be considered “real food”
1) The Complete Calvin & Hobbes
2) Walt Whitman Poetry & Prose
3) US Army Survival Guide
4) Coconut Lovers Cook Book
5) Playboy – The Complete Centerfolds
as much as #5 pains me
, your list cracks me up Ed! hahaha!
HAHAH!!! #5??? Is that a real book, Ed???
All those books are on sale at Amazon. I think the Playboy is very practical. I am sure all those staples will come in hand in an emergancy.
1, bible
2, practice of the presence of God, brother lawrence
3, 4, and 5 – big, thick, blank notebooks
but just for the record, i think it’s strange we always ask these questions about what we’d take or who we’d like with us on deserted islands. as if we can prepare for such an experience? well, i suppose we could, but i don’t carry my above 5 books on transpacific flights; and i’m assuming i’m not alone in that.
i wonder if our “obsession” with making lists of the most important things to have on deserted islands is really an unconscious desire to simplify our lives? we know we have too much stuff, and somehow our minds enjoy the process of determining what’s actually important?

LOVE THIS!
yeah – he’s deep like that. And he can cut right to it!
it might sound really deep, bran, but when i reread it all i can think about is that it’s supposed to say “subconscious,” not “unconscious.” what an idiot.
hilarious!
#3, 4, & 5 = I can see how you’d want that. But, tell me, James: whatchu gonna use to write in them?
As for your questions regarding our subconscious need to simplify, I will defer to our very own Hannah F. Young on that one, since she did start this discussion on her blog. I just stole the idea because I thought it’d be fun to see who’d pick what!
probably i’d just fill all three notebooks with poetry.
not really, but that would seem to be the sentimental, deserted island type thing to do. i’d probably write prayers or ponder the meaning of life — or spend years making three masterfully crafted flip books.
… and THEN i reread your question: what will i USE TO write in them? not what will i write in them… ha.
but your question is an easy one to answer. i need only to steal a single bird’s feather and kill an octopus in order to harvest his ink.
Ink! Brilliant.
(ps: I love flipbooks!)
I think JamesBrett has a good point- though I asked the question because forcing people to make hard choices is an interesting way to get to know them
Clearly Mandy knows what I’m talking about or she wouldn’t force people to choose between icky things like 4inch long toe/fingernails.
touche!
1. The B-I-B-L-E
2. Pride and Prejudice
3. When The Enemy Strikes
4. I’d have a book made of pictures of everyone I loved and take that.
5. The Other Boleyn Girl….. I know, random.
BUT, if I were clever, I’d say….
1. A Kindle or Nook packed with every book I’d ever need. ;o)
…..and end it there.
actually, scratch The Other Boleyn Girl and replace with A Proper Pursuit. Much more uplifting and fun. ha!
Pride and Prejudice is one of my faves. I even liked the movie. And The Other Boleyn Girl was my favorite for a long time- her characters seemed like real people.
Do you have a Kindle or a Nook?
If I can’t have my MacBook, you definitely can’t have a reader!
Agreed, but only because having an eReader allows you to bring a gazillion books, thus defeating the point of the question.
Which negates you ever asking it over there.
ahhh shyooooooot.
1. The Bible
2. Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey
3. Anne of Green Gables
4. A really really thick book of puzzles to keep my mind sharp
5. A botany book specific to the deserted island I am on so I know what plants are safe to eat. Maybe the book could have a chapter on delicious “Taste of Home” recipes so I can read them while I eat the flavorless plants and imagine I am eating a “Peanut Butter Cup Chocolate Cheesecake” or “Grilled Sirloin smothered in bleu cheese butter.”
Anne of Green Gables is so so awesome. I wanted to be her.
oh I forgot about Anne! She is my favorite heroine!
I think that #5 book would make me crazy depressed…
yeah i would agree… #5 was written by the “dieting, carb-deprived, no sugar” side of me
1. The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King
2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein (the big one with all three in one)
3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
4. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
5. The Bible
Mandy, I don’t think that you can substitute the Macbook for a REAL book- especially since you’d be substituting it for Redeeming Love. If you have to take the Macbook, why not substitute it for the telephone book (leaves will work okay, I think) or for How to Survive on a Deserted Island. That book looks lame. 32 pages? I would need waaay more than 32 pages of instruction in order to survive on a deserted island…
Ok Ok. I’ll give you 32 pages. And I’ll put Redeeming Love there.
But, ughhh….. c’mon! It’s my blog. I can make up the rules, right?
But, wait, you DID start this game at your blog, didn’t you? So this makes you the Game Master. dangit.
1. My Bible…because I sleep with it also:)
2. my journal…because it will help me remember me:)
3. Believing God- Beth Moore…HANDS DOWN:)
4. Conversations with the invisible(poetry) by Cady:)
5. Just Give Me Jesus- Anne Graham Lotz
Great list.
So… how come #5 doesn’t have a smiley after it?
ha ha…that is my thing isn’t it…so sorry:)
trying to follow you on twitter but cant find your name
