Our Band needs a name… Yes. This means I’m in a band.

The fellas gave me permission to let the cat out of the bag. So here it is. And it went something like this:

Me: “Do you want to get more involved in playing at church on Sundays?”
Jay: “Well… Actually, what I really want to do is start a band.”
Me: “Really…(insert wheels turning)…? Well… What kind of band…?”

Then he used words like MuteMath and Radiohead and a lot of other bands that I’ve never really heard of. And, I guess judging by the look on my face, he said: “Are you interested?” At that point, the voice of my therapist came rushing back, tactfully encouraging me to get over my fear of performance.

Somewhere in the middle Jay Sellers and I brought Russ Hutto in the mix. Y’all remember Russ the rapper, right? Yes. THAT Russ!

So, two months later, we are a nameless band that could be described as Jennifer Knapp and Coldplay’s lovechild. With The Fray and Alanis Morissette and OneRepublic hanging off the family tree. This is a completely new songwriting/songbuilding experience for me, having an entire band to put meat on the skeletons of what I’m writing–and they keep saying I write like “The Hush Sound” but I have no idea what that means. Needless to say, new songs have taken an interesting turn in the past two months, writing for The Band. And I like it. Oh y’all… I so-very-much like it.

BUT, here’s the thing: we need a name. And there are some seriously creative people among this blogging community. So, bring it. What’s a good band name for a vibey rock chick-singer band?

  1. I’ll be sure to throw a name out there if I think of anything good, but what I really wanted to do is ask to please be informed as soon as possible once the band is named so that I can tell everyone who my new favorite band is;) I am so excited for this new adventure in your life, I cannot wait to hear this mighty enmeshment of awesomeness!

  2. Maybe “Twice Shy”? As in once-bitten-twice-shy, a not so oblique reference to performance anxiety. By the way, I totally identify with that stage fright thing! Awesome that y’all have formed a band – you’re living my dream – GO FOR IT!! And tell Jay I said “hey!”

      • Thanks for the kind thoughts – the sun has come out again. The name actually comes from my love of the the blues (music, that is!) Good luck with the band name. Been trying to figure out something for a duo for about a year now. Can’t agree or they are just lame ;)

  3. Woohoo to you being in a legit band!!! You are so rad-worthy of bandness!

And please tell me you were joking when you said you didn’t know who MuteMath was?!

Maybe you could call yourselves, simply “The Band”… or “THE Band” for emphasis. Or maybe Bandaliscious. Or Band Gone Wild.

In other words, I got nuttin’. (But I’m super pumped for your sake!!!)

  4. Earth Tone (I don’t know where this came from. I just typed it)
I’m probably not really good at this name game either since I don’t know the names alread out there…there is probably already one named everything I am thinking.

    • Hey Kim! Thanks for playing anyway. :) I obviously have no clue either, since they kept naming names and I had no idea who these bands were. But I’m taking notes here and will run ‘em by the fellas.

  5. If you want something to catch people’s attention – Mandypants and the Vibes, Fearlessly Funky, Two Feet Tappin,

Simple – (number of guys in the band) Rockers & One Chick

Southern – Georgia Calling, Brunswick(Southern) Persuasion, Brunswick Hot Sounds

Sersly (add whatever word best describes you sound)

  6. Clueless ? in honor of not knowing your band’s influences?
Then play with the spelling… kloollesce which make me think of Coalesce. which takes to Coal Miners Daughter … CoaldPlay… kinda taken.
So after all that, I like Coalescing or maybe Clualescing…

  7. the Mand Girl Band. (not as in girl band but mand-girl) Manned Mand Band. yes these are all LAME haha but all part of the process…right? :)

    Chocolate Bacon.

    Macon. Must have bacon

    baconchoc

    chocolacon

    anyways….

  8. I don’t have a name idea – sorry:( But I am anxiously awaiting the sound of Jennifer Knapp meeting Coldplays Love child. anxiously I tell ya, it’s bound to be fresh and new :)

  9. West of Freedom (or something with direction as a part of the name).
West because you are west of the freedom the ocean offers….
And it offers the idea that you are approaching freedom…
    dunno. :-)

  10. I’m so behind. HOLY CRAP you’re the lead singer in a band!!!! ROCK STAR.

And even though i’ve been too sick to be around, i’m totally the president of your fan club.
