The only reason why I’ve never had a bucket list is this: disappointment.
Period.
That’s it. See, the things we put on our ‘bucket list’ are things we really want to do before we “kick the bucket,” right? But what if we can’t do them? What if they are outrageous or superfluous or impossible?
It all ends up in a big disappointment… That’s why I’ve never bothered to have a bucket list. I don’t want to sign up for any more disappointment.
Until recently… I recently came up with one really cool thing I’d wanna do before I “kick the bucket” and it’s disappointment free; if I don’t do it, I’ll still be ok. I’ll survive.
But MAN I’d love to do this if I could. And I, in some half-awake nap stage, decided that I’d start a bucket list just to officially declare to friends and fate that I really wanna do this.
Yes, it’s the only item I have on my bucket list. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is that I now have a bucket list. And that fact alone makes me feel like I’m alive! Like I’m actually finally living–taking life by the horns and claiming my 8 seconds. (Or something leathery and gloved and dusty and daring like that.)
So, friends and fate, listen up!! I want to experience one of those high-speed driving courses. Yes. I want to drive (not like Sydney Bristow, as most of you would expect) but like Jason Bourne.
I wanna go all “Jason Bourne” behind the wheel, y’all…
Ah huh.
So what’s on your bucket list?
rv trip with my family around the US to all the little house on the prairie landmarks, with stops along the way at mt. rushmore, yellowstone, and grand canyon.
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do something like that. But Drew refuses to drive an RV. Huh. Maybe I need to get my RV license or something… Now you’ve got me thinking about list item #2. hmmmm
Unless you’re planning on one of the big ol honking RV’s, no special license needed. You can rent one of the smaller ones. But then again with gas prices right now, you might consider a jeep and a tent. But definitely go see Yellowstone & Mt Rushmore. Pictures just don’t do it justice.
ooooohhhhh. See? You are always full of great ideas!
finish high school… that is kind of my easy way out cause I am only a year away! If I was really dreaming I think I would want to back pack. You know a big old trip around Europe or Greece Italy all that good stuff. Traveling around and learning all that good stuff.
Drew did some backpacking in France when in college. Kinda jealous!
Do good in school and then sign up for this special honors program at the University of Georgia where they pay for you to do all those things. (Yeah I married a really cool nerd.)
nice coy college name drop and nerds are cool especially well rounded traveling nerds
Indeed!
oh wow. that sounds like a good one!
and i know that they have car courses you can take, i myself plan on taking one once i buy a new car because you have to provide the car, and my saturn won’t be worth anything by the time i get around to buying a new car so i’m using that. you’re welcome to come up and share when the time comes.
i am trying to think of what my bucket list would be, i feel that i have things i’d like to do, but it wouldn’t be the end all if i don’t. lets see what i can list.
* i want to live in Europe, in an adorable tiny flat
* i want to backpack around europe while pregnant with my first child
* i want to see the mountains out west
* go to australia
* learn how to surf
* have my hair grow out to my waist and then dread lock it and then shave my head
*learn to play the piano really really well and not just dabble
* move to a tropical island for a bit and be a beach bum for Jesus
* i want to own a house with a kitchen big enough to feed the hungry and enough guest rooms to house the displaced, forgotten and homeless
* i want to be a mother, it doesn’t have to be my biological child, just a child that desperately needs a mother.
* maybe own a coffee shop
these are what i automatically think of when i think of my bucket list. its a bit strange, but then again so am i
Wow–love your list! That’s awesome and I could see you doing any of those things. We’ve got some beach-bums for Jesus down here, ya know!
We also have a federal law enforcement training facility in our town, which has all sorts of driving training sessions… We know someone who might be able to sneak me in somehow… somehow. Drew’s talking to him for me. But don’t tell anyone I told you that!
ya know, the more i read your blog and twitter the more i think ‘ I HAVE to get down and visit sometime soon.’ which seems a little strange to me seeing as how we didn’t spend all that much time together when you lived up here… you’re just a cool person i wish i could spend more time with.
i know! you moved away and i finally moved up! like ships passing in the night.
Oh the injustice!
I have had a list of sorts in my head, but it has changed rather recently.
Things, places, and people that were on it before are not on it now.
I have not written any of it down so I guess that’s a good thing.
But I’m pretty sure I’d have skydiving on my list…
Skydiving? No way nor. No way!!!
Skydiving has always been on my list too… at least the list that is in my head. Now that I have kids, though, I’m much more scared to try it. Still want to though.
Woah…. You’re such a daredevil. But I must say that I’m not surprised!
i SO agree..that whole disappointment thing is what keeps me from the list. it’s like uh what if my list changes or what if i don’t get to do some of them or what if they’re out of my control. sometimes i wish i wasn’t such an achiever/list maker! but i like your idea…just things that i’d like to do with no pressure. if they happen, great. off to ponder that some more. =)
and when you get to do yours (which i hope you do!) then take really awesome pictures to share!
Oh Katy. We will have full coverage of the Bucket List completion.
Don’t you worry about that.
Now, about yours: I propose your first bucket list item should be “make a bucket list.” See? It’s a no fail!!
I once dreamt with a boy I thought I was going to marry (thank goodness we didn’t) that we’d both like to visit every zoo in the US. And have a kitten named Cassius Clay.
I’d be okay if I died and neither of these events occurred. So…. What would I like to see, or do before I kick the bucket?
Meet Sara Groves? Oh, I did that a few years ago. And it was so freaking cool that I still smile big thinking on it.
1. learn to play cello.
2. Become a paramedic, despite my disability in mathematics and the fact that every math teacher I ever had told me I would not be capable of functioning well enough to even go to college with my deficiency.
3. See Anne Frank’s house.
4. Still manage to be a sponge for learning when I’m old and wrinkly.
Dreamt = perfect word choice
I can see you digging Sara Groves! 1 = you can’t? 4 = You might just have to settle for sponge baths! heh hehhh
Mandy: Way.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
I have a bucket list but haven’t added much to it. I think one thing I would like to do is travel to Ireland. Sounds lame, but I would love to do that before I die
Kyle: That doesn’t sound lame at all. Seriously! Who wouldn’t wanna see that beautiful land?
I don’t have an actual list written down, but I think about it from time to time. Right now, I would love to go live in Europe for a year and learn to cook all the wonderful foods of all the different locales. I’d probably come back weighing 300 pounds, but to be able to experience the authentic cooking, lifestyle, history and everything else it has to offer of Italy, France, Greece, Spain… that would be fantastic.
The other thing on my list, and this will probably happen, is to take my daughter back to China some day. To explore where she was from and the history behind the area. To walk a portion of the Great Wall again. It’s another one of those places where pictures just don’t capture it enough.
I’ve heard about that great wall, and that the pictures don’t even capture the …… enormity of it. Whew. And to have a Julia Childs season of learning to cook all that fantastic European food! I think that’s a lovely idea.
annnnnd my long comment just got eaten by my phone! cliff notes version: one thing I’d love to do before I die (but doubt I will because it’s so frickin expensive) is hot air balloon over the Serengeti during the migration. a. ma. zing!
I think I remember you talking about this before. Man I wish you could! It’d be absolutely breathtaking!!!
I have always wanted to travel all over the world (thus the allure of my current job). However, I think next time I travel I will make sure I take Blane with me.
I think that’s the best of ideas!
I’d love to live in Italy {and of course I’d be independently wealthy so I wouldn’t have to work…I could just wander in and out of museums at my leisure and drink wine in little cafes while listening to violin players in the square} and Paris {same scenario} but more realistically, I’d love to see RENT on Broadway.
mmmm…. wine. I have a friend in Rome right now. She’s doing a lot of sitting & sipping coffee (or whatever they call it there) and having an incredible time!!
